Preview: The Camden Crawl 2010

Preview: The Camden Crawl 2010
by Kevin E G Perry
The Camden Crawl
Holly Miranda finally makes it to the UK
post-volcano, and plays on Saturday

It's been looking suspiciously summery these past few weeks, which can only mean that festival season must soon be upon us.

Starting things in some style, next weekend sees the Camden Crawl once more descending on, a hopefully sun-kissed, North London and making hordes of jaded indie fans fall in love with Camden all over again. Bands will be performing all weekend long in any nook or cranny where there's room to swing a guitar. From established venues like the Dublin Castle and KOKO to tiny pubs and the occasional living room, the streets will thrum with the sound of eager musos seeking out new sounds while desperately trying to avoid the queues.

After a successful debut as a participating venue last year, the Roundhouse returns to host an MTV stage this year. It's worth bearing in mind, however, that entrance is only guaranteed with an additional purchase of a £6.50 pass per show on top of the normal £34.50 day ticket, or £55 weekend option.

It'll make use of its status as the largest available space to house the most populist end of the Crawl's lineup spectrum. For its Saturday afternoon show, Professor Green joins that modern-day 'Ship of Theseus' the Sugababes and Calvin Harris while the evening show sees Plan B and Pendulum take the stage. On the Sunday, The Blackout and Lostprophets line up for the afternoon show, while Stornoway and We Are Scientists play the evening slot.

Away from those weighty, if firmly mainstream, names, Camden Town high street will host a plethora of more esoteric acts in more intimate venues, just waiting to be discovered. In total, 20 venues will be taking part, with events from midday each day until four the following morning, so it's handy that the Monday is a Bank Holiday. As is their wont, the Crawl won't be revealing exactly where and when any acts will be playing until the day.

We do know, however, that among the acts on Saturday will be legendary former Creation Records band Teenage Fanclub, expected to be previewing material from their forthcoming record Shadows. Also catching the eye that day are perennial art amateur Billy Childish with his Musicians of the British Empire, noise merchants Pulled Apart By Horses and folk-rock duo Slow Club. Although there's something for everyone amongst the sprawling lineup, so perhaps Ms Dynamite or New Young Pony Club may be more to your taste?

On Sunday, there are a couple of legends heading up the bill in the shape of London's own Roots Manuva and pioneering post-punkers Gang of Four. The line-up's also a treat for those looking for poetic eloquence with both Speech Debelle and Lightspeed Champion waxing lyrical. However, the real joy of the Crawl is in uncovering the cult heroes of tomorrow, so it's worth seeking out forward thinkers like Drums Of Death and YACHT.

In an attempt to ease the traffic caused by the eagerest ears in London, a host of acts will play both days. Among those offering you two bites of the cherry are Boy Better Know's grime superstar Skepta, presumably well-spoken songstress Eliza Doolittle and the much-hyped Crystal Fighters.

As well as the music, they'll be lots more on offer over the weekend. They'll be comedy and theatre as well as spoken word, including acts from the always reliable BookSlam team.

We will of course once again be there for the duration, wearing out our shoes from Mornington Crescent to Chalk Farm in search of the very best the Crawl has to offer, from established legends to up-and-comers. Why not come along and see what you can find?

The Camden Crawl takes place on 1 and 2 May 2010 in various venues in Camden, London, NW1. Tickets and full line-up information can be found at thecamdencrawl.com.

Our Eurovision entry really isn't up to much is it

It is rare that I ever blog negatively , but I agree 100% with this Popjustice article. How could we have got it so wrong after Jade got it so right last year ?

Our Eurovision entry really isn't up to much is it
Story filed Thursday, 22 April 2010
We'd forgotten all about this but someone on the Popjustice forum has just posted a link to the studio verison of Josh Dubovie's 'That Sounds Good To Me'.

This is the song the United Kingdom is sending to Eurovision.

It is the song that it is felt - by idiots, let's be honest - will best represent the UK on the world stage.

Nothing about this song is good. It has no redeeming features. If it were a second hand car it would be one with a massive shit on the driver's seat. It is like a nightmare that exists in the physical realm, the Freddie Krueger of Eurovision entries slashing multiple cuts across pop's jugular. It is Comic Sans, a fart in a crowded lift, a dishwasher with an unsatisfactory rinse cycle, a Conservative election win, an unexpectedly hefty tax bill, homework on a Sunday night and next door's whining dog. It is all of that and more but it is not, and this is worth remembering as 'Eurovision fever' grips (trans: doesn't grip) the country in the coming weeks, something that "sounds" "good" to "anyone".

It is, more than anything, a real shame.

Rock4Life music festival cancelled

Rock4Life music festival cancelled
Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi of Status Quo
Status Quo were among the acts due to appear at the event

A new music festival in the Highlands which was to feature veteran rockers Status Quo has been cancelled.

Rock4Life was due to be held on 1 May at Whiteness, near Ardersier, and raise money for the Highland Hospice.

The second day of the two-day event, at which pop acts Sugababes and McFly were due to appear, had already been cancelled because of poor ticket sales.

Highland Council confirmed they had now been told by organisers the festival would no longer be going ahead.

Rock4Life was expected to attract a crowd of about 20,000.

A spokesman for Highland Council said they had been informed the decision to call off the entire event was taken due to the "knock-on effect" from the loss of the second day, which created a cash-flow problem.

Hospice benefit

He said: "Everything was in place for the event to go ahead and the organisers had the proper permissions.

"This has come as a disappointment."

The website for the festival, which was organised by Caledonian Productions, has been shut down.

David Welch, fundraising director for Highland Hospice, said: "At the end of the day we were to benefit from the profits for the event.

"We didn't know how much that was going to be and it is not something we budgeted for, but we are disappointed if it isn't going to go ahead."

Breaking Sugababes News~New Album started

Sugababes begin work on new album
Wednesday, April 21 2010, 13:17 BST

By Robert Copsey

The Sugababes have started working on their new album, their manager has revealed.

The group, which Heidi Range recently insisted are not splitting despite poor sales on their latest album Sweet 7, are reportedly going back in to the studio to start work on their eighth album.

The trio's manager Mark Hargreaves has now spoken out, insisting that the group are in high spirits and are working on a new record.

Hargreaves told Now: "They're a very happy group today. They can't wait to get back into the studio and bring back that feelgood factor."

The magazine also reports that their previous hit single 'Girls' recorded with former Sugababe Keisha Buchanan will be re-recorded with new member Jade Ewan's vocals, and will be used to promote US department store JC Penney.

Hargreaves said: "It's brought a massive resurgence of interest in the band over there."

Buchanan is reportedly in talks about penning a tell-all book on her time in the band.

NST Music Makers ~ Sweet 7 Review

Get it and sing happy! SUGABABES Sweet 7 (Universal Music) I DON’T know the members of this British pop girl band these days, but I guess it doesn’t matter because the music from the group sounds pretty generic. Danceable pop.

Mindless electro beats.

Lyrics oozing promises of sex.

It’s all found in this seventh album from this chameleon girl band whose brand has been around for a decade.

Amazing, isn’t it? The sleeve notes state that Sugababes now comprises Heidi Range, Amelie Berrabah and Jade Ewen.

The songs are all radio-friendly. Of the 11 tracks, Wear My Kiss is the most memorable for its use of the vocoder and the chorus: “You wanna wear my kiss/All over your body/Once you try it on, you can’t live without it.” Standouts include the sweet bubblegum pop of Sweet & Amazing and the ballad Little Miss Perfect.

While nothing from Sweet 7 reach the mashup fun of Freak Like Me, not even Sean Kingston of You’re Beautiful Girl fame on Miss Everything, the tracks are club bangers, especially She’s A Mess.

The album is great for electro-pop fans.

Keisha Buchanan - Buchanan 'Planning Tell-All Sugababes Book'

Buchanan 'Planning Tell-All Sugababes Book'
British singer KEISHA BUCHANAN is reportedly planning to lift the lid on the SUGABABES' troubles in a new tell-all book.

The group has been dogged by rumours of infighting over the years and now contains none of the founding members.

Buchanan - who starred in the original line-up with Siobhan Donaghy and Mutya Buena in 1998 - left the band last year (09) amid allegations she was forced out by the record label.

And now she's planning a book to make the band's problems public, according to Britain's Now magazine.

A source tells the publication, "Keisha's in discussions about writing a book about her time in the band. Publishers have been after her for ages, but it's only now she's seriously considering it. At the moment it's still in the initial stages, but she's very excited.

"The book will chart the highs and lows and obviously deal with the very public split last year. Keisha's always kept quiet about what really happened even though the others have spoken at length about it."

Buchanan's former bandmates Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah now front the band with new member Jade Ewen. Last month (Mar10) Buchanan teamed up with Buena and Donaghy to launch a legal challenge for the right to use the title Sugababes.

Sugababes are to perform with Slumdog Millionaire composer A. R. Rahman at the Indian Premier League Awards.

The Bollywood star and 'Jai Ho' producer will appear with the group at the grand finale of the awards show, which celebrates the cream of the crop in Bollywood talent.

"The IPL Awards is the crowning jewel to recognise the best of this season," said IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

Heidi Range tweeted her excitement about the performance earlier in the week, saying: "What started off as a really lovely morning has just been interrupted by getting injections for our trip next week, but INDIA here we come! X"

Range recently ended speculation that Sugababes were splitting up.

Sonu and the Sugababes!

The Sugababes are coming to Mumbai. This hot English female pop group from London will perform live at the IPL on April 25th. But there’s something else on their agenda, too — they will be recording with Sonu Nigam.

Sonu’s ready with three tracks that he has composed himself. He will record one of them with the Sugababes. “The tracks are totally mainstream,” says Sonu. Talking about the collaboration, he says, “Their music is really good. I did a lot of study on their kind of music and with my programming team, we’ve come up with three tracks.”

The Guinness Book of World Records has named the Sugababes as the most successful female act of the 21st century, thanks to seven UK No. 1 singles and 18 UK Top 10 hits. Sonu is naturally excited about this collaboration and he’s also enjoying his new role as a singer-cum-composer. “Until recently, I was just a singer, but now I’m really enjoying making music along with singing. I have always been interested in music, gadgets, software and now it’s coming to my help,” he says.

And since he’s going global, was there any special preparation? “I did a lot of research on the contemporary music scenario. I spent time upgrading my sound sense and I feel now I’m able to get the kind of sound which is acceptable worldover,” he says. Music apart, will the video with the Sugababes be quite a bold one? “It’s going to be very interesting for me and the Sugababes,” smiles Sonu.

Bollywood biggies to add spark to IPL

AR Rahman, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar, Bipasha Basu, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif — the who’s who of Bollywood are getting ready to shake a leg for the Indian Premier League. While Hrithik and Bipasha will perform at the IPL Grand Finale on April 25, a bevy of stars will add glamour to the first ever IPL Awards Night, to be held on April 23, in Mumbai.

While the organisers tried to keep the line-up a closely guarded secret, HT City learnt that Hrithik will be dancing to songs from his upcoming film Kites, and will also do a choreographed number with Bipasha Basu. “Hrithik’s performance will be really special and will include some of his past hits,” says a source from Cineyug, one of the event management companies organising the event.

Rahman, apart from performing the Oscar-winning hit Jai Ho, will also be seen performing with British pop group Sugababes.Talking about the international stars, besides Sugababes, that are expected at the Grand Finale, an organiser revealed, “Our first choice was the American rapper PitBull, but he refused. The next choice was Black Eyed Peas, who also said no. We also approached Usher, but he asked for too much money.”

The IPL Awards Night will be hosted by SRK and Johar, while Shilpa Shetty, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra will perform. “The IPL Awards is the crowning jewel to recognise the best of this season,” said IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

Players on stage?

If Lalit Modi, has his way, a host of cricketers will also perform at the IPL Awards Night. A source from Cineyug, the event managers, said, “A proper choreographed performance by a team is impossible as the cricketers are busy with matches. However, cricketers Sreesanth, Brett Lee and Chris Gayle are likely to perform live. While Sreesanth will dance to a filmi number, Lee will sing and play the guitar.”

The Sugababes have insisted their future is secure, amid rumours they are about to split.

Sugababes deny split .Following years of big success, the group's latest album, 'Sweet 7', has been a critical and commercial disappointment.

However, Heidi Range insists the girl band have no plans to go their separate ways and are looking forward to recording together again.

"That rumour has been flying around for the past nine years!", she said of reports about their demise.

"If we were going to split up I'd just come out and say it but we're actually having a great time.

"We're off to India next week and then we're back in the studio to record some new tracks," she insisted.

Meanwhile, US reports that Sugababes had been dumped by Jay-Z's US label, Roc Nation, has also been dismissed.

"We have never been 'signed' to Roc Nation for a scheduled album release in America," says a message on their official website.

Rocklife event - Anger as parents unable to buy tickets

Promoters deny they are to blame as poor sales lead to second day of Rock4Life event being cancelled
Anger as parents unable to buy children’s festival tickets
By Jonny Muir

Published: 15/04/2010

Parents yesterday criticised the organisers of a Highland music festival, saying they were unable to buy children’s tickets for the event.

One mother was told she could only buy adult Rock4Life tickets – double the price of children’s tickets – when she inquired at two vendors in Inverness.

It emerged on Tuesday that the second day of the inaugural festival at Whiteness, near Nairn, had been cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

Just 477 out of 20,000 tickets were sold, with acts including McFly, the Sugababes and Lemar, failing to “capture the imagination” of the Highland public.

Parents contacted the Press and Journal yesterday, blaming low ticket sales on the apparent lack of availability of children’s tickets.

One mother was told she could not buy tickets, costing £22.50, at two advertised sellers in the city-centre, Number 27 bar and a Highland Hospice shop.

Tobias Leask, of Caledonian Productions, which is organising the festival, countered the claims, insisting children’s tickets are available from both outlets, as well as Eden Court and the Eastgate Centre.

He said: “There is no problem with children’s tickets. I get reports daily and I can see that families are buying tickets.”

Karen Mackay, of Invergordon, who wanted to buy tickets for two adults and three children, said: “This is a family event, I presume, with the Sugababes and McFly, so why no children’s tickets locally?”

She said her only option was buying tickets through Ticketmaster, which she said would have incurred an 8% booking fee and a charge for postage.

She added: “I feel that having the only option of additional booking costs and postage certainly put me off and maybe this is why the event has not sold well?”

Another mother said: “We can’t buy children’s tickets anywhere. All the venues told us to purchase adult ones. The Sunday show would have been more fun for kids.

She added: “We have been waiting and waiting on the tickets to be sorted out, probably like hundreds of other parents in the Highlands.”

Rock4Life will now be a single-day event on May 1, featuring Status Quo, former Runrig singer Donnie Munro, Steve Harley and Cockney Revel and the Vatersay Boys.

Profits raised from the festival will be donated to the Highland Hospice, an Inverness-based centre for adults with incurable diseases.

Sugababe Keisha Buchanan set for Strictly Come Dancing

Sugababe Keisha Buchanan set for Strictly Come Dancing
By 3am's Clemmie Moodie and Danielle Lawler 15/04/2010

Former Sugababe Keisha Buchanan has been lined up for the next Strictly Come Dancing.

Beeb bosses have approached the singer, who is in LA laying down tracks with Dallas Austin for her solo album. And we hear Keisha, 25, is keen to take on the challenge.

A pal tells us: "Keisha was thrilled when asked to be part of the show. But she is a little apprehensive.

"In the Sugababes, it was all about the singing. They never really danced. So the training would be really hard for her.

"Her pal Alesha Dixon saw her solo career really take off after Strictly and she's hoping that it could help her, too. "She has so much on, it depends on whether she can fit it all in. "But she is seriously keen. It's one of the only reality shows she would ever consider."

Amelle's Happy with 2st Weight Gain

Amelle's 2st Weight Gain
Amelle Berrabah

Pictures of a size zero Amelle Berrabah shocked fans in 2009.

But since finding love (and peace at work), Amelle's gained weight.

Now the Sugababes star says she is happier than ever with her 9st figure.

Speaking to Closer magazine, Amelle, 25, said: "I've always been thin, and conscious of it. The stress last year meant I lost even more weight.

"I wasn't not eating because I wanted to be skinny.

"I felt like a little boy with no boobs. Now I've put on weight my boobs are back and I've got a bum."

The stress that Amelle is referring to is likely to be the tension within the Sugababes, which ended in the departure of Keisha Buchanan from the band last September.

Size zero: Amelle last year But it's not only a settled work life that has given Amelle her body confidence. She also puts it down to her happiness with new boyfriend Tom Benn: "He's lovely. We've only been official for the last few weeks but it's great.

"I'm glad I found him."

So how has Amelle been getting her new, curvier figure? The singer recently posted on Twitter: "Just had the nicest pizza ever."

And: "I had a chicken club with cheese instead of bacon."

At last, a celebrity diet we can get on board with.

Life's sweet in LA for JLS

Jls are having a Suga-coated introduction to the tough music business in Los Angeles.

Keisha Buchanan - formerly of the Sugababes - is also in La La Land working on her debut solo album and has taken the boys under her wing, intro-ducing them to big names like Jay-Z and Kanye West.

A source said: "It's all go for JLS, and there's even talk of a collaboration with Keisha - who is already making waves with music honchos."

Proving again it's not what you know, but who you know...

Sugababes Sweet 7 Album Launch

The Sugababes launched their album Sweet 7 at the trendy Supperclub in London's Notting Hill on Wednesday 3rd March and we were there to catch all the action just for you! Find out what happened below and watch the performance videos!

The exclusive Supperclub was decked out in opulent style for the launch party, with large white beds, scatter pillows and small tables. The guests partied to the DJ's floor fillers as they waited for the glamorous trio to arrive.

Amelle, Heidi and Jade, dressed all in black, opened the launch with their big UK hit "Freak Like Me" accompanied by a live band dressed in white boiler suits and sparkly black masks!

They then sang the popular "Hole In The Head" and their latest single from the new album "Wear My Kiss" before launching into "Too Lost In You". The girls said that they were delighted to be live on stage again in front of their fans before singing "Crash And Burn" from Sweet 7. The band then performed the hugely successful "Girls" with fans singing along word for word.

The fans went wild when the girls made an energetic performance of their second single from the new album "About A Girl" before moving on to "Push A Button". They made a stunning performance of "Get Sexy" and rounded off the spectacular line up with "About You Now". The girls closed the gig by thanking everyone for coming before jumping into the surprised crowd on exit. They then continued to party with guests and new Sugababe member Jade Ewen commented that the girls are all really excited to be on stage performing and are looking forward to their future together as a band.

The much anticipated Sweet 7 is in stores now! Check out the girls performances from the album launch below: (Link not working on photos , need to go to Website http://www.sugababeslovewindows7.com/sugababes_sweet_7.html)

Lucie Cave's diary - Heidi does Zumba

"So last week we had the delights of Pineapple Dance Studios Louie Spence in heat Towers – this week I bumped into none other than Chace Crawford off of Gossip Girl on reception. Well, he wasn’t so much on reception (he wasn’t answering the phones – that would be too brilliant), he was more leaning across reception with a stubbled face speaking in a deep voice. For more on his stubbly whereabouts keep your eyes on heatworld. He might be popping up on this very site. That’s all I’m saying.

Aside from Chace-chasing, I got up at stupid-o-clock this morning to dance about like a stupid thing with Heidi Range from the Sugababes (see pic). She invited me to try out the latest celebrity workout craze called ‘Zumba’ at Virgin Active - and I worked up a right old sweat. And trod on her foot. It’s a Latin-based dance workout which is the reason for my lack of coordination (I can’t actually dance), but was actually very fun. Other celeb fans are Victoria Beckham, Shakira and Michelle Obama, but I didn’t see them in the changing room afterwards (or the shower, for that matter). Thankfully Heidi is just like the rest of us ladies when it comes to matters of food “I LOVE carbs and can’t stop eating them,” she told me. “For me to keep the weight off I have to go to the gym between 3-5 times a week, while the other Sugababes can eat what they want and not even exercise. It’s not fair!”.

Speaking of not fair. I had to suffer a train journey home from Liverpool this weekend with a load of football fans stood on top of me (I nipped up to visit some of my Hollyoaks pals Jennifer Metcalfe and Claire Cooper who’ve just opened their own fancy designer clothes shop called The Closet). One even farted in my ear. The football fan that is, not a Hollyoaks girl. I’ll leave you now with a snippet from a conversation I have just had with heat’s Art Director about a set of pictures we’re printing in heat next Tuesday. “Can the headline go into the arse do you think?” “Maybe we can put Mark Croft’s face on it.”

Rock festival second day cancelled

Rock festival second day cancelled
Published: 13 April, 2010

Sugababes - had been due to star on second day of Rock 4 Life.

THE second day of Highland festival Rock 4 Life – featuring Sugababes and McFly – has been cancelled.

Festival organisers Caledonian Productions have confirmed the May 2 line-up for what was to have been a two-day festival has been dropped because of poor ticket sales.

Ticket outlets had been advised in the middle of last week to stop selling Sunday tickets.

Tobias Leask, one of the organisers, said just 420 out of a potential 10,000 tickets had been sold for the Sunday, leaving them with no choice but to cancel the second day.

The festival at the former McDermott's oil yard at Whiteness, near Ardersier, is in aid of the Highland Hospice.

Lined up to top the bill on the Saturday are veteran rockers Status Quo. Other acts include Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and ex-Runrig frontman Donnie Munro.

Great view of Amelle at the top of St.Pauls Cathedral

Pure and simple: Amelle Berrabah chose a flirty white dress for her night out

Sugababes star Amelle Berrabah looked chic in a flirty white dress, which she teamed with a pair of beige, suede biker boots.

The 25-year-old singer beamed as she arrived at London's May Fair hotel, clearly full of the joys of spring.

Heidi Range’s Fiance Cries To Impress Her

TV presenter Dave Berry – who proposed to the Sugababes star earlier this year – tries to show his softer side as he knows it’s something the singer likes.

He said: “I’ve tried to cry more since Heidi absolutely fell in love with Tom Hardy who appears in a Kleenex advert. She loves him in that, so I’ve been trying to force myself to cry to get in on that action. All I do is wave my fingers in front of my eyes to calm myself down.”

Although Dave is happily engaged to Heidi, he is also a fan of another girl band singer – Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts.

He told Attitude magazine: “Nicola Roberts is my favourite member of Girls Aloud. No disrespect to her, she was always the ugly ginger one. Now she’s snuck her way into almost becoming a fashion icon.”
