Heidi Interview with Metro

Thanks to @Heidi_RangeFan for the heads up

Heidi Range: I'd like to be in a film like Love Actually or Notting Hill

Sugababe Heidi Range tells Metro about being scared of everything, being inspired to be a singer after watching the movie Beaches and what advice she would give to wannabe girl groups.

Heidi Range: 'I'm the biggest scaredy cat ever'

You’re doing a booze promotion – are you worried people might think you’re an alcoholic?
No. I think most people can enjoy a glass of wine without having the whole bottle. I’m not saying: ‘Drink lots of bottles of it on your own.’

What inspired you to become a singer?
I wanted to do it ever since I was a little girl. I went to dance school from the age of three so I’ve always been performing but what really motivated me was the film Beaches. I watched that all the time with my friend when I was little. We watched it so much we could do the dialogue from the whole film. When Bette Midler sang I thought it was amazing.

What’s been your most unusual day’s work?
We’ve performed at some really amazing and strange private gigs. We did one for someone’s birthday party on a yacht in Monaco which was the size of a cruise liner. It’s unbelievable. We’ve done private gigs with other bands for someone’s 17th birthday party. You think, what are they going to do for their 18th?

What other girl group songs do you wish the Sugababes had recorded?
We were recording with producer Dallas Austin and he played us Don’t Cha before it was released and we were asking: ‘Can we have it, we really want it?’ But he wouldn’t let us. Everyone knew straight away that song was going to be massive.

What advice would you give to aspiring girl groups?
It’s such a rare opportunity to do this job – just remember to enjoy it and have fun. Their success will be down to the music. For us, it’s about our vocals. We love doing different looks for videos but it’s always about the songs and being able to pull it off live.

What lessons has the music industry taught you?
It’s mad to see people come into it and get carried away and let the fame part go to their heads. It’s sad to see people behave like that, to see people who crave fame. You see the desperation.

Is there a lot of that around?
Loads. I suppose it all depends on the type of person you are. It’s sad when you ask kids what they want to be when they grow up and they say ‘famous’. For me, it was about wanting to be a singer, not about being famous. I knew I could sing and wanted to do it for a living. It’s sad when a young person’s only aspiration is to be famous because so much of it is a load of nonsense.

Who will be the next Sugababe to leave?
Hopefully none of us. We’re all happy. As time goes on, you all grow in different directions and want different things from life. We’re all enjoying it now and hopefully it’ll all carry on harmoniously.

Do you talk to any of the ex-Sugababes?
No. I don’t think Mutya and I ever even had a row and we never fell out. She wanted something different and we never kept in touch. When she left I was waiting for her to phone to tell me why but she didn’t. We got on really well. She’s a lovely girl.

What are you scared of?
I’m the biggest scaredy cat ever. I’m scared of flying, scared of driving on motorways, scared of walking around when it’s dark. I watched Paranormal Activity and I couldn’t sleep for a week. I was petrified even in the daytime. I was looking around in case any objects had been moved.

What do you want to do when the Sugababes end?
I’ll always be in music or drama because that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do. I’d like to act in the future. I’ve always wanted to be in a Working Title movie like Love Actually or Notting Hill, even if it’s just sitting in the background in a café having a coffee. I love those films.

Sugababes singer Heidi Range has dyed her blonde hair bright red to coincide with the launch of new wine Gallo Summer Red.
Heidi Range has dyed her hair bright red.
The sexy Sugababes singer is famed for her blonde tresses but decided to undergo a radical image change to coincide with the launch of Gallo Summer Red, the first time a big brand has created a red wine designed to be served chilled.
Heidi - who is following in the footsteps of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Blake Lively by dying her hair red - is the face of the new drink and said of her new role: "I am really thrilled to be working with Gallo this summer to launch this exciting new style of red wine. I'm looking forward to enjoying Gallo Summer Red with my friends, it's fruity and refreshing and will certainly be a staple in my fridge.
Heidi has previously spoken about her tresses, saying she tries her hardest to get it looking big and sexy.
She said: "My hair is naturally fine and poker straight, so I'm always trying to create big, curly waves."
Gallo Summer Red will be launched in June 2011.
