Sugababes have said their new album will be "darker [and] tougher" than their previous material.

The girl band explained they have been "recording a lot" recently and are starting to pick the tracks which will form the LP.

Speaking to
Digital Spy, band member Jade Ewen revealed that the album will follow a similar template to new single 'Freedom', a snippet of which recently appeared in an advert for mobile phone firm Nokia.

"We still haven't signed off on it completely yet, because it's always good to keep recording and we just want to pick the very best," she commented. "'Freedom' is a good idea of the sort of template that we're going with. It's a bit darker, tougher and quite edgy."

Sugababes are now on their fourth incarnation - neither Ewen nor bandmates Heidi Range or Amelle Berrabah were in the original line-up.

Last year, founder member Mutya Buena launched a legal battle with the band over who should own the rights to their name.
