I'm in a Girl Group!

Radio Times
Review by:
Jane Rackham
Whether it was Sister Sledge, Bananarama or the Spice Girls, it always looked like it was fun being in a girl band. And that was the key to success — it was synchronised sisterhood: a permanent girlie sleepover with added stylists; a bond that no one — not even a boyfriend — could break. What girls really, really want is to be in a girl group.

Taking a similar path to last week’s edition about boy bands (ie with masses of nostalgic clips and interviews nestling among the irritating and irrelevant comic-book sequences), this starts with America — the Supremes, the Crystals and the Ronettes. Then it’s on to the Bangles and the Nolans (inexplicable choices to me) before taking us up to the heady girl power days of the Spice Girls, reality TV creation Girls Aloud and the ever-changing line-up of the Sugababes.

About this programme

The second of three documentaries about life in the music business focuses on that secret sisterhood, the girl group - a heady and combustible mix of talent, ambition and hairspray. Those lifting the lid on a life of girl power, baby love and walking like Egyptians are members of the Spice Girls, Bananarama, Girls Aloud, the Bangles, Sister Sledge, the Ronettes and the Supremes.
