'Are they or aren't they?' speculation has been circulating the industry for weeks.

And now it appears as though the cat is out of the bag; the original Sugababes are indeed reforming - if Emeli Sandé is to be believed.

The singer/songwriter let slip earlier this week that she has been writing material for the original line-up, Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy.

Despite Mutya previously denying the rumours, Emeli wasn't so coy when quizzed on the speculation that she has been working with the girl group.

The Heaven singer told MTV: 'Yes, that is true. I’ve written for the original line-up of the Sugababes, which I’m very happy about because I just loved them when they first came out.

'I loved their sound, it was so cool. It was very different, so I’m happy to kind of be involved in what started the whole Sugababes journey. It sounds amazing.'

Whispers started after both Keisha and Mutya tweeted about working in the studio with Professor Green on the same day in early January.

Keisha wrote on January 5: 'Hanging out in the studio with @professorgreen and two lovely ladies with bags of talent :-p lol.'

Mutya tweeted: '@ studio wit professor green in tha building and 2 beautiful ladies' (sic).

The Daily Mirror quoted a source this week as claiming: 'The girls are very much back to their soulful roots but this time around it's far more innovative.

'They've recorded more tracks too - and they're working hard to get a body of new work.

'Siobhan has left her job in the City and they are concentrating on getting material together for an album. They are very dedicated and it's working well.'

If the rumours are true, the girls will have to reform under a different moniker.

As the current line-up of Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen are still operating as the Sugababes, the original three will have to come up with a new name.
