Heidi Range Is Still 'Good Friends' With Ex
Sugababes singer Heidi Range and her ex-fiancee Dave Berry are still ''very good friends'' despite their split and teh radio DJ supports his former lover in everything she does.
Sugababes singer Heidi Range and her ex-fiancee Dave Berry are still ''very good friends'' despite their split.
The couple were due to marry in early 2012 but called time on their eight-year relationship last autumn after growing apart, but the radio-and-TV presenter insists he and Heidi are still close.
When asked if they just drifted apart, he said: ''Yeah, it's just one of those things. But we're very good friends. I'm still supporting 100 per cent (in everything she does). I like to know she's alright.''
The former couple last saw each other at the National Television Awards in London last month and Dave - who co-hosts The Capital Breakfast radio show with George Clooney's ex-girlfriend Lisa Snowdon - admits it was great to see Heidi again.
In an interview with more! magazine, he said: ''We had a drink and a catch-up, which was great because we're both so busy. Then I had to leave early to get a good night's sleep and we went our separate ways.''
Heidi and Dave got engaged during a holiday to India in 2009 and the 'Freak Like Me' singer had even picked out a wedding dress before they broke up.
Sugababe Heidi Range admits ice skating is taking her mind off a broken heart
The 28-year-old singer says the ITV show has proved a lifeline after she broke up with fiance, DJ Dave Berry, after eight years together
Love life's on ice: Heidi with ex Dave BerryPA
Considering she has spent the last few months being flung around the ice in a series of potentially bone-breaking moves, it’s a surprise to learn Heidi Range is terrified of skating.
And not just skating – a chat with the Sugababes star quickly reveals she is terrified of almost everything.
But in a more emotional moment, she also opens up about how her stint on Dancing On Ice is helping take her mind off her agonising split from the man she planned to marry.
The 28-year-old singer says the ITV show has proved a lifeline after she broke up with fiance, DJ Dave Berry, after eight years together.
Admitting the show followed an “incredibly difficult” time in her personal life, Heidi says: “I never thought for a second I’d do it.
“I’d never have considered it because I really am a scaredy cat by nature – I’m terrified of almost everything.
“I’m scared of walking in the dark, sleeping on my own, driving on motorways, heights – I’m a genuinely safety conscious person.
“The other day me and my skating partner Andrei Lipanov almost had our only row because he didn’t have his seatbelt on – it was bothering me.
“I’ve even got myself a helmet for practising, even though Andrei insists I don’t need one.”
Showgirl: Heidi says she's embracing the outfits needed for the programmeITV
But she says the show was a welcome relief when her relationship with Capital FM breakfast show presenter Dave broke down ahead of their planned marriage later this year – Heidi had already decided on a Vera Wang dress.
She says: “Dancing on Ice was a great distraction from the break-up. It’s been good fun and different to throw myself into rather than sitting at home thinking about it.
“I’ll be lost when it finishes because it really does take over your whole life, and I have gone from a really difficult phase to throwing myself into this and absolutely loving it.
“I really don’t know what I’ll do with myself when it’s over.”
The break-up stunned fans who had considered the pair one of the strongest in showbusiness when Heidi made the announcement on her Twitter page in December. She wrote: “Very sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate. I wish him nothing but the best in life.”
Although the pair are determined to remain pals, they had a tiff when they met at last month’s National TV Awards. After Heidi referred to a gift she had bought Dave, he retorted: “Well, I still pay your Sky bill”.
Now, chatting at the show’s training rink, where she put me through my paces on the ice with a few of her newly learnt moves, Heidi added: “I’m really enjoying being single right now.”
The welcome distraction from her personal trauma may even have made her countless skating injuries worthwhile.
She says: “I hurt my knees yesterday, but the first bad fall was when my bone came right out of my wrist. I fell while practising a really simple step but it was an awkward fall. I heard it make a loud crack. They took me straight to hospital, where I was sobbing as they told me they thought it was broken.
Elegant: With dancing partner AndreiITV
“I was distraught at the thought of having to quit the show, but luckily it wasn’t broken. The bone had just come out of the joint. The physio is like a magician and she managed to twist it in a funny way and shove it back in.
“It’s become so frequent I’ve got used to being in pain. I’m almost expecting to be carrying an ice pack, heat pack, stitches – I’ve stopped being shocked.
“I cut my leg open with the blade of my skate on film week – the blade went into my leg and I had to have it stitched up. It was only one stitch but I wasn’t even surprised anymore.
“I’m at the stage where as long as the bones aren’t broken I’m fine with it.”
Injuries almost ended Heidi’s chances in the contest even before it began, when her original professional skating partner Sylvain Longchambon was forced to pull out days before the first live show.
An injury in rehearsals left the Frenchman with a torn bicep, and appeared to leave Heidi’s dreams in tatters after finally gaining the confidence to be lifted on the ice. “I had six weeks learning with Sylvain before Christmas, and then on the last day before the break we had a show and tell session where everyone performed their routines for the other contestants.
“We’d just started skating and out of nowhere he ruptured his bicep, right at the beginning of the routine. That’s when I met Andrei. We only had about six days of training before the first show so I did worry we would struggle.”
Heidi admits: “I was upset. You get really close to your partner and spend and lot of time together building up trust.
“So to then be lifted up into the air by someone different is terrifying. We’ve been working together about five weeks now and that trust has come back, but I had to just do it straight away with Andrei and that was terrifying.
Oh, Hei: She lifts a leg in training
“I just had to do it because the show was coming up, he kept asking, ‘Don’t you trust me?’ and I was telling him I did, but I don’t trust myself. I’m jumpy and edgy, I wriggle and shake.
“It’s a very unnatural feeling being thrown around and lifted up in the air. Every time I try something new I scream my head off.” After six weeks on the show Heidi has finally come to love the competition, and is desperate to stay in the running despite criticism from some of the judges and a few lecherous remarks about her racy outfits.
“The judges have been very fair and constructive,” she says. “So I appreciate them and take on board what they say and try to work on what they tell me.
“I like Jason Gardiner, I know him and he’s a lovely guy, but I think the new panel are brilliant – Louie is fantastic and I just love listening to what he comes out with on everyone’s comments.
“You don’t see a lot of the judges off screen – occasionally in hair and make-up but to be honest I think they’re trying to keep it very professional. You don’t meet them in the bar after the show on a Sunday night or anything. I guess they don’t feel it’s right, and don’t want anyone suggesting that they’re getting too friendly with any of us.
“It’s nice to know that people like the outfits – I tried on the gold catsuit before Christmas and it really scared me.
“I genuinely upped my gym sessions and cut down on carbs over Christmas, but I think that was probably the scariest outfit.
“I think on this show you’ve just got to embrace the costumes – I don’t know that I’m going to win any votes from them, but I guess some blokes might be tuning in for that kind of thing.
“I can’t imagine why they would, but then I haven’t got a man’s mind…”
OK, I admit it. I’ve sat watching Dancing On Ice and scoffed at some
of the hapless performances. Not any more. Ice moves: Our man has a go
Ice cool: Simon and Heidi looking goodDaily Mirror
At least not since I landed flat on my backside as I tried to show off a few, er, skills after my interview with Heidi.
The things they’re asked to do are tough – really tough.
As I found out when I went sprawling in my slashed, little red Lycra number when Heidi helped me try a few moves.

Dad must be so proud.
Being thrown around an ice rink and attempting dangerous moves that could result in serious injury is not what most people would enjoy.
Although Heidi Range is terrified of falling flat on Dancing On Ice she is happy that the show is helping distract her from her recent heartbreak.
The Sugababe split up with the man she wanted to marry and after eight years together the pain was too much to bare.
Happy days: Heidi Range says Dancing On Ice is helping her get over Dave Berry
The 28-year-old was engaged to radio presenter Dave Berry and after they broke up she admitted that times got tough and she found the whole situation 'incredibly difficult.'
She told the Daily Mirror: 'Dancing on Ice was a great distraction from the break-up. It’s been good fun and different to throw myself into rather than sitting at home thinking about it.'
The show has acted like a safety net for the Liverpool born singer and although she has just announced that she will be taking part in the DOI tour, she is scared about finishing the program.
Ice queen: The Sugababe has lost weight since taking part in the show
She told the newspaper: 'I really don’t know what I’ll do with myself when it’s over.'
Heidi said that the end of last year was the worst time of her life but she is slowly becoming herself again and there are no hard feelings between her and Berry.
'We’re still great friends and I saw him last week... but it’s hard. Dancing On Ice has got me through it. It’s given me a new lease of life,' she told the Sunday Mirror last month.
Slim fit: Miss Range is back in shape thanks to Dancing On Ice training
Heidi, had been engaged to Dave, 33, over New Year in 2009.
She added: 'My life’s been turned upside down and I don’t know what is going to happen.
'I’m thinking about a solo album, I’m thinking about TV presenting, I’m thinking the world is my oyster right now. For 10 years every part of my life has been planned. It’s been in the diary. It’s exciting to be making a fresh start.
'This show has been brilliant. It’s given me confidence and I’ve got my groove back.'
She revealed that even the couple's closest friends didn't know about the split until it was made public.
The star has lost more than a stone since preparation began for the show and fits into a size six jeans.
'The weight loss has been brilliant,' she said.
'I was just over eight-and-a-half stone before I started. I’m 5ft 2in and I’ve always had to work really hard on my figure.
'Now I’m more toned than ever. I see my personal trainer three times a week, on top of the skate training.'
Did Heidi Range and Dave Berry split because he was a 'naughty boy'?
Inside golden couple Dave Berry and Heidi Range's shock break-up
Dave Berry and Heidi Range appeared to be devoted
They seemed like one of showbiz's strongest couples.
But Now's learnt thatDave Berry and his fiancée, Sugababes' Heidi Range, had been on thin ice for a long time before they announced their split on 10 December.
And in an explosive revelation, we've been told that three weeks before they went public about their break-up, Dave drunkenly let slip to passengers on a transatlantic flight that he'd been ‘a naughty boy'.
A friend's also revealed that Capital FM DJ Dave's been at the centre of several unsubstantiated rumours concerning drunken nights where he's been a ‘little too flirty' with various girls.
Now's gossip antenna first twitched when we heard that Dave, 33, had been spilling the beans to passengers during a Virgin Atlantic flight from New York to London in November.
One fellow traveller told us: ‘He got drunk and was flirting with the female crew.
'He was at the bar in the Upper Class cabin, asking the girls if they had partners.
‘Then he said he'd just broken up with his girlfriend as he'd been "a naughty boy".
'He wouldn't say any more, but he was all over a couple of women who were flirting around him.'
Another pal says Dave's known for getting flirty.
He reveals: ‘There have been rumours about him with girls while he's out on the lash.'
The allegations follow an incident in August when Dave was pictured appearing to kiss Alexa Chung.
Shortly after, Alexa split with long-term love Alex Turner.
Dave denied it was what it seemed, saying: ‘There was a photo that looked like we were kissing.
We weren't.'
Heidi and Dave are thought to have split a few weeks later, in September, but they didn't go public with the news until two weeks ago.
Heidi, 28, Tweeted: ‘Sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate a few months ago. I wish him nothing but the best in life.'

Wedding scrapped ... Dave Berry and Heidi Range in happier times
Published: Today at 15:45
SUGABABES' Heidi Range and her TV presenter fiancé Dave Berry have split after eight years together.
The pair scrapped wedding plans following the end of their relationship in the autumn.
Liverpudlian Range took to her Twitter this morning to tell her followers of her heartache, writing: "Very sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate a few months ago.
"I wish him nothing but the best in life x"
A statement from Berry's spokesperson read: "Dave Berry announced today that his engagement to partner Heidi Range has been broken off.
"Mr Berry announced the news today although the couple agreed to separate in the autumn.
"The split is amicable and no third parties are involved and he will make no further statement on the issue."
In May this year Berry was singing the songbird's praises publicly, saying of Heidi: "She's amazing. She makes the house smell nice with all her lotions and potions."
The former lovers had been an item since 2003.
And on New Year's Eve in 2009 Berry proposed while the couple were on holiday in India.
Happier times ... Heidi with Sugababes bandmates Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen
They were considered one of the industry's strongest couples and were expected to marry this winter.
But today, Sugababe Heidi Range and her radio and TV presenter fiancé Dave Berry announced they had split up after eight years together.
The pop star, 28, took to her Twitter page to break the news and wrote: 'Very sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate a few months ago.

Unlike his ex-fiancee, Berry didn't say anything on his Twitter page and instead wrote about going to Nandos with his radio colleagues.
Berry and Range met in 2003 and on New Year's Eve 2009, Berry proposed while the couple were on holiday in India.
Good looking couple: Heidi and Dave looked sexy and very happy together as they arrived at the National Television Awards in January
They told OK! Magazine that they were planning a wedding in London in October 2011 with Heidi adding that she already had her eye on a designer dress.
She told the magazine: 'I haven’t tried any yet but when I did a gig in Barbados with the Sugababes, Vera Wang’s daughter came up to me and said, "My mum was at the gig and she’d love to make you a wedding dress". I nearly passed out, I’ve always dreamt of a Vera Wang wedding dress!'
In May this year, Berry said he loved living with his future bride, adding: 'She's amazing. She makes the house smell nice with all her lotions and potions.
New project: Dave will replace Johnny Vaughan to co-host the Capital FM breakfast show with Lisa Snowdon from January 2012
'But it's good having time apart, too - nothing adds longevity to a relationship like a European tour, that's what I always say.'
No reason was given for the split and fans of the pair took to their Twitter page in their hundreds to pass on the news of their separation.
Both have exciting new projects to help them move forward and keep them busy over the next few months.
Heidi is currently training as one of the contestants of the next series of Dancing on Ice and then getting ready to promote the new Sugababes album next spring, while Berry will be preparing for some early starts when he takes over from Johnny Vaughan on the Capital FM weekday breakfast show.

Dave Berry with his breakfast show cohost Lisa Snowdon
Dave Berry has been confirmed as the new breakfast presenter of London radio station Capital 95.8 following the sudden departure of Johnny Vaughan.
Berry, who presents Capital's weekend breakfast show and is engaged to Sugababes singer Heidi Range, will join Vaughan's co-host Lisa Snowdon in early January.
Berry has presented shows on Channel 4 youth strand T4 and spent three years on Capital's sister station, Xfm.
He began his career on children's channel Nickelodeon and presented the TRL request show on MTV.
Various big names had been linked to the breakfast show, including Radio 1's Chris Moyles and Scott Mills, following Vaughan's unexpected exit on 18 November after nearly eight years in the job.
But it was thought likely that the station, which said it was looking for a younger host than 45-year-old Vaughan, would look in-house for his replacement.
Moyles had previously been linked with a move to Global but recently signed a new contract with Radio 1 until 2014.
Vaughan will be a tough act to follow, as the No 1 commercial radio breakfast show in London. Berry is likely to be substantially cheaper than Vaughan, who picked up an annual salary of about £800,000.
The singer kissed a female model on the set of the group’s new ‘orgy’ video Freedom and has declared she loved it.
The revelation came as the pop trio revealed they like to share the same bed on tour. ‘It was good,’ Berrabah admitted, recalling her close encounter with a dancer called Vanessa.
‘She had soft lips,’ the 27-year-old said of their daring shoot, which also saw bandmate Jade Ewen pucker up to a dancer called Claire.
Berrabah had to stop herself having flashbacks during her chat with Gaydar Radio’s Neil Sexton and Debbie Ryan and said: ‘My mind is in the gutter!’
Summing up their new girlie concept, she said: ‘It’s just freedom… uninhibited. People have said it is very dark and sweaty. It has been described as a giant orgy.’
While she and Ewen were ready to jump the fence temporarily, engaged bandmate Heidi Range steered clear so she didn’t upset her fella, presenter Dave Berry. ‘There was no one left for me when I got there, I was last on set,’ said Range.
Instead Berry was more worried about the muscled men gyrating up against her. ‘I knew my scene was with this guy, so I spoke to Dave and I was like, by the way, all the men are gay,’ she explained. ‘He said: “They’re definitely all gay, aren’t they babe?”’
It's been quite a while since there was a truly great light entertainment show on TV that doesn't have Simon Cowell, dancing celebrities or the word reality associated with it. Dave Berry's karaoke gameshow The Beat Goes On (exec produced by Ant & Dec, no less) is hoping to fill that void, challenging members of the public to dance and sing their way to prizes.
We caught up with Dave to chat karaoke, his girlfriend Heidi Range and what Ant & Dec look like in their jeans.
Did you ever imagine in your wildest dreams you'd one day host a show with your own house band?
"Oh no!! Oh Alex, you must know how I feel. You phrased that question so brilliantly. No, not in my wildest dreams did I think that I would have my own dance troupe. Nor did I think the Saturday night TV gods Ant & Dec would allow me to call them the Boogie Berries.
"Ant & Dec are execs and when they said I would have my own house band, I was impressed. When they dropped the dance troupe bomb, I was automatically signing on the dotted line."
Were Ant & Dec very hands-on with the show?
"What a terrible thing to do to a presenter, be hands-on if you're Ant & Dec. But yes, they came down to a couple of recordings and they basically let us get on with it. They hung around... in their causal clothes. You haven't lived until you've seen Ant & Dec in their casual clothes.
"After the series wrapped, we went back to their house and had some champagne. They were really complimentary about the show and that was quite a moment in my career. I'm glad the boys were happy."
Do Ant & Dec ever not wear suits?
"That's exactly right, Alex, I was shocked! I was like, 'oh look at little Ant in his little jeans!' No, they're great bosses to work for. The first thing I want with a show is for people, viewers to enjoy it and celebrate it, but after that it's about having fun with the team and I try to make life for everyone as easy as possible.
"But when your execs are the Godfathers of Saturday night entertainment, it can add a little bit extra pressure... to say the least. But they're happy, that's the main thing."
Are you going to out them both as karaoke addicts?
"I think at Ant's house, he has a secret room and I'm sure in that secret room, it's like Lucky Voice in Soho and it's a karaoke den. The boys did get involved. They had a go on the Hotstepper, which is the only three-person dance machine in the world. That was a bit of fun when the cameras were not running. There was some fun to be had on set."
Why didn't you secretly leave the cameras running and film that?
"That's the problem with Ant & Dec, they are so powerful, I daren't go against them. If they knew I had that material, I would probably be dead right now."
What are you like on the karaoke?
"There is a reason I get paid to talk about music on the TV and radio and not make it. I know I can't sing. Some of the contestants on our show... nobody has clearly broken that news to them yet. But when I do get my arm twisted or have one too many Stella Artois, I tend to go down the 'Sympathy For The Devil' Rolling Stones route. Even with my tone deafness, I can't f**k up with a 'wooh! wooh!'"
You haven't learnt anything from Heidi then?
"You'd think she'd pass on some tips. But the only thing I've learnt from her is how to change my bandmates and get away with it."
Does she ever stop you doing karaoke?
"I'm a free spirit, Alex. If I want to sing, not Heidi, not any other member of the Sugababes, past, present or future are going to stop me. What is quite frustrating [is that] Heidi has an amazing voice and is a talented singer. That's half of what Sugababes are about, they are great singers, not auto-tuned Saturdays.
"But Heidi will never sing for me. She won't ever entertain me and my friends, she won't ever do karaoke. Me and my mates are like, 'go on play 'Push The Button' you b*tch'. But she never plays along unfortunately."
That's massively disappointing!
"Well said, Alex! I can see we're going to get along well. What's the point in having a popstar girlfriend if you can't get her to sing for your mates?"
If you can't sing, can you dance?
"The problem with dancing is... I know I can't sing, but when I dance, I think I'm like Jay Kay from Jamiroquai. I like to think that I have some deep-rooted soul that gives me a natural timing and finesse on the dancefloor that is yet to be rivalled. However, I have seen myself on wedding videos and in national magazines dancing and I look like a total idiot.
"There's a great pic of me at Ashley and Cheryl's wedding and I thought I was in the zone and looking pretty damn hot, but the picture that was used in a national magazine.... well... I thought I was looking smooth doing a finger click. In reality, I'm in an awkward position looking really camp and there's Sol Campbell just stood looking at me with a quizzical look thinking, 'what the f**k does that guy think he's doing'. I know how bad a dancer I am, I've seen it in Sol Campbell's eyes."
What other projects are you working on?
"I've just finished the iTunes festival with Alexa Chung. This is what I learnt from Heidi about replacing the bandmates. The first series of that I did with Peaches Geldof. Then I did two with Fearne Cotton. Now I've moved on to Alexa Chung. It's just a revolving door. I've also just done some Beer And Pizza Club for ITV and my tailors that I own, October House, we open our first store in London next month. "
You look like a chap who enjoys his fashion...
"Yes I am. Not that I would ever consider myself a celebrity, but it's not me being paid to wear suits. It's a proper business that I'm running day-to-day. We're very lucky because without doing any PR, GQ and Esquire have done complimentary pieces and it's all gone really well.
"I love clothes and I love tailoring. I've never seen Mad Men, I should make that clear. I actually wrote an article for a website called 'Mad at Mad Men'. Do you ever wear a suit, Alex?"
Very rarely. I'm quite a scruff...
"I'm sure that's not true. I'm sure you look effortlessly cool. No, the thing is you can't wear a good suit these days without someone saying, 'oh, hey, Don Draper'. I'm like 'f**k off'!' The suit thing is really cool and I'm my own stylist for The Beat Goes On and all I need to do is get Ant & Dec wearing them and I'll be away and running."
The Beat Goes On starts tonight at 11pm on Channel 5
TV presenter Dave Berry – who proposed to the Sugababes star earlier this year – tries to show his softer side as he knows it’s something the singer likes.
He said: “I’ve tried to cry more since Heidi absolutely fell in love with Tom Hardy who appears in a Kleenex advert. She loves him in that, so I’ve been trying to force myself to cry to get in on that action. All I do is wave my fingers in front of my eyes to calm myself down.”
Although Dave is happily engaged to Heidi, he is also a fan of another girl band singer – Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts.
He told Attitude magazine: “Nicola Roberts is my favourite member of Girls Aloud. No disrespect to her, she was always the ugly ginger one. Now she’s snuck her way into almost becoming a fashion icon.”

HEIDI Range was in her pyjamas when fiance Dave Berry proposed to her on New Year's Eve.
Talking exclusively to OK! Magazine, Sugababe Heidi Range was wearing pyjamas and slippers when fiance Dave Berry popped the question on New Year's Eve.
The happy couple invited us round to chat about their romantic proposal, and Heidi told us she was definitely not expecting Dave to pop the question when he did.
She revealed: "Our flat overlooks Parliament and the London Eye and we’ve got amazing views of the fireworks on New Year’s Eve and there’s an amazing party atmosphere up there, so we decided to have a relaxed evening drinking champagne as we were flying early [to India] the next day.
"I was in my pyjamas putting the washing on while watching Love Actually and at five to midnight, I went to get my slippers to go on the roof terrace."
Dave added: "Shoes, not slippers! Meanwhile, I ran into the kitchen, quickly got the ring out of my pocket, opened the box and got down on one knee. I wasn’t prepared for Heidi being so long, though, so I had to keep changing knees because of the cramp!
ABOVE: Dave Berry and Heidi Range have been dating for six years
"She eventually came round the corner clutching a bottle of champagne in her cleavage and that’s when I said to her: ‘Would you do me the honour of going to India with me as my fiancée?’ At that point, I’d love to say she said: ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ and had lots of tears, but Heidi just stood and stared at me for ages just shaking."
"Then I put the ring on her finger and she stood up and said: ‘Yes!’ It was romantic for a hundredth of a second before Heidi went: ‘Ooh let me look at the ring!’"
The pair, who have been dating for seven years, are planning a wedding for October 2011 and can't wait to start planning the huge bash.
Dave said: "It’ll be in London, it’s the best city in the world and it’s where all our friends are. Everyone can have a great time and just get a taxi home."
And Heidi already has her mind set on a Vera Wang gown for the big day, she added: "I haven’t tried any yet but when I did a gig in Barbados with the Sugababes, Vera Wang’s daughter came up to me and said: ‘My mum was at the gig and she’d love to make you a wedding dress.’ I nearly passed out, I’ve always dreamt of a Vera Wang wedding dress!"
