Heidi Interview and New photos in Daily Mirror 30.6.12

"Internet troll urged me to get an eating disorder": Heidi Range says she's happy with her curvy body despite pressures

After years in the pop limelight, the Sugababes star and former Atomic Kitten has learnt to live with criticism of her looks

She wowed audiences with her moves and stunning figure on Dancing on Ice and her girl next door beauty has made Sugababes singer Heidi Range a pin-up for men everywhere.
But good looks usually come at a price when you’re in the public eye and Heidi’s curvy shape has made her the target of Twitter trolls.
“Someone once tweeted me saying: ‘Why don’t you get an eating disorder, you look fat next to the other girls in the band,’ which was a bit harsh.
“Now when people criticise me I just think, ‘Get a life!’” she says.
The Liverpudlian is now a trim size 8 but says she has always had to watch her weight having yo-yoed over the years.
“I have never been really heavy but I have gone up and down,” she says.
“But the older I get, I have learnt to accept myself and when someone on a website is commenting on my outfit, I think, ‘Haven’t you got something better to do?’ I have. I don’t have time to comment on what earrings some stranger is wearing!”
Heidi, 29, admits she has noticed a big difference in her body shape since she was on Dancing on Ice last winter and has maintained her new slinky shape having started sessions with a personal trainer three times a week.
“I’ve always worked out and I enjoy the benefits of keeping fit. I like the way it makes me feel. But since I’ve been using my personal trainer, I feel so toned and healthy.
"I’m 30 next year and I feel the best I’ve ever felt in my life.”
Heidi is the longest serving member of all-girl band the Sugababes – their current line-up includes Jade Ewen, 24, and Amelle Berrabah, 28.
A member of the original Atomic Kitten before she joined the Sugababes in 2001, the sexy Scouser has been in the public spotlight for years.
But she says negative criticism about her body image and dress sense over the years has affected her confidence in performing live.
“Of course it hurt, I’ve had moments when it has bothered me. But I get paid to go on stage – it’s my job – so sometimes I have had to force myself.
"I don’t buy those magazines which make a point of criticising.
"I used to, but now I’m older, I know that all people have good and bad days, and who are they to judge people on what size their waist is or whether they are a nice person or not?
“I realise that if you eat well and look after yourself, you feel so much better about yourself.
"But that is an age thing. If I was my younger self and I was reading one of those magazines and saw what they say about cellulite, then I would be ashamed of myself. But now I know that 99% of women have it, so I’m not on my own.”

Heidi admits the weight crept on gradually without her noticing until she took control of her diet and eating habits.
“I was touring and I wasn’t buying my own clothes – my stylist was.
"I was very happy with my boyfriend and having takeaways and nice bottles of wine and dinners.
"I was really bloody happy until I got on the scales! It was a bit of a shock then so I changed my diet about a year ago.
“At my peak, my weight was probably nine and a half stone and at my lightest, seven and a half stone. I’m just over eight stone now and I’m content with that.
“But I have even been criticised for saying that I don’t want to go back to a size 10!
"People have had a go at me, saying: ‘What’s wrong with being that?’ I just want to say, there is nothing wrong with being a size 10, and I have been that size for most of my adult life, but I just like being a bit more toned.
“I think anyone would be lying if they said they don’t want to be more toned. I don’t have the perfect body but I’m happy with the one I’ve got.”
Heidi credits her positive attitude to health and fitness in helping her bounce back from her break-up with MTV presenter and Capital Radio DJ Dave Berry last year. They had been together for eight years.
They appeared to be one of the happiest couples in showbusiness and got engaged when he proposed to her on holiday in India on New Year’s Eve 2009.
They were due to marry this year until Heidi announced their amicable split on Twitter in December 2011 and told followers about her heartache.
Although she is single, Heidi reveals she would love a family but frets that she would be concerned about any kind of bullying over their weight as she was acutely aware of the issue herself when she was growing up.
“Kids are so cruel to each other. I hope one day I’m blessed with children but it must be the worst thing in the world to have a child who is being bullied because of how they look; it would destroy you as a parent.
"There is a lot of pressure for children to look a certain way and it’s not fair as we are all made different,” she says.

“There is a big issue with obesity but I’ve always been conscious of my size from a very early age.
"I think because I was dancing in leotards from about three years old, I didn’t want to look fat. I was never one of those kids who ate loads of crisps and chocolates. From my experience as a little girl, the images you see from a young age of skinny girls with flawless skin are not like real life.
“Even in the band, we all have very different bodies. For example Jade – she has legs longer than my entire body and can eat whatever she wants.
"She’ll be sat there with a club sandwich and her long legs and I’ll be there with chicken salad and no dressing with my little legs!
"I’d love to have longer legs but that’s the one thing I can’t fix – and no amount of running will change that.”
Heidi did the Race for Life last weekend to raise awareness for Cancer Research.
“It’s a really special race as it’s all-female and everyone there is supporting or remembering someone that has been affected by the disease. Most people have been touched by cancer at some point, or a loved one will be,” she says.
She admits for the first time that she had her own cancer scare last year after a routine smear test found a problem.
“I went for my usual test and they found some abnormal cells and I had to go and have laser treatment,” she says.
“I was just like every woman who goes to the doctors and has been a few times for a smear and expected it to be clear. I thought I’d get the letter back saying everything was OK – only this time, it wasn’t.
“When I found out something was wrong, I felt sick and panicked. I was terrified.
"I did some reading about it and it’s not uncommon but still frightening. I went the next day for my laser treatment.
"I was only in for half an hour or an hour and the procedure sorted me out.
“This is why girls should go and have their smear tests every three years, because even if it was abnormal, it would still take more than three years to develop into something more serious. If you don’t go, you don’t know what’s going on inside and surely it’s better to be safe.
“It’s not a pleasant thing to have done and I was in a fortunate position where I could see a private doctor but it’s so important to do it.
"If I had not had it treated, it could possibly have developed. I know so many women who have never even been for the test, even my friends’ parents.
“Now I go every year rather than every three years and fortunately I had a letter a few weeks ago telling me everything was fine in my latest smear.
"Cervical cancer is something that can be prevented. Girls should just make an appointment and go!”

Heidi met Jade Goody a few times and the Sugababes performed at her wedding to Jack Tweed in 2009 shortly before Jade passed away from cervical cancer.
Speaking about her own scare, Heidi says: “I was aware it might not turn out well. Jade’s story is so sad and you can’t help but think of her. If fans are going to look to me for guidance I would hope it would be about their health.”
Taking part in Race for Life has added significance for Heidi as she lost her beloved grandad Peter – who she called Pop – to lung cancer when she was 14: “I remember him being ill and him suffering for a long time and going to a Marie Curie centre,” she recalls.
“It was awful as I saw the physical change in him and watched him lose his shape.
“He was always quite slim but he was also fit as he’d been a builder but he lost loads of weight. Everyone called him ‘Pop’ and he used say ‘smashing’ all the time.
“I went to stage school in Liverpool and he came to all the shows to watch my sister and I.
“It’s sad he never got to see me grow up and have success.”
Heidi, who ran the Race for Life with her mum Karen, adds: “It was especially moving for us both to be thinking about him.”

Dave Berry and Heidi Range appeared to be devoted
They seemed like one of showbiz's strongest couples.
But Now's learnt that Dave Berry and his fiancée, Sugababes' Heidi Range, had been on thin ice for a long time before they announced their split on 10 December.

And in an explosive revelation, we've been told that three weeks before they went public about their break-up, Dave drunkenly let slip to passengers on a transatlantic flight that he'd been ‘a naughty boy'.

A friend's also revealed that Capital FM DJ Dave's been at the centre of several unsubstantiated rumours concerning drunken nights where he's been a ‘little too flirty' with various girls.

Now's gossip antenna first twitched when we heard that Dave, 33, had been spilling the beans to passengers during a Virgin Atlantic flight from New York to London in November.

One fellow traveller told us: ‘He got drunk and was flirting with the female crew.

'He was at the bar in the Upper Class cabin, asking the girls if they had partners.

‘Then he said he'd just broken up with his girlfriend as he'd been "a naughty boy".

'He wouldn't say any more, but he was all over a couple of women who were flirting around him.'

Another pal says Dave's known for getting flirty.

He reveals: ‘There have been rumours about him with girls while he's out on the lash.'

The allegations follow an incident in August when Dave was pictured appearing to kiss Alexa Chung.

Shortly after, Alexa split with long-term love Alex Turner.

Dave denied it was what it seemed, saying: ‘There was a photo that looked like we were kissing.

We weren't.'

Heidi and Dave are thought to have split a few weeks later, in September, but they didn't go public with the news until two weeks ago.

Heidi, 28, Tweeted: ‘Sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate a few months ago. I wish him nothing but the best in life.'

SUGABABES' Heidi Range and her TV presenter fiancé Dave Berry have split after eight years together.

The pair scrapped wedding plans following the end of their relationship in the autumn.
Liverpudlian Range took to her Twitter this morning to tell her followers of her heartache, writing: "Very sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate a few months ago.
"I wish him nothing but the best in life x"
A statement from Berry's spokesperson read: "Dave Berry announced today that his engagement to partner Heidi Range has been broken off.
"Mr Berry announced the news today although the couple agreed to separate in the autumn.
"The split is amicable and no third parties are involved and he will make no further statement on the issue."
In May this year Berry was singing the songbird's praises publicly, saying of Heidi: "She's amazing. She makes the house smell nice with all her lotions and potions."
The former lovers had been an item since 2003.
And on New Year's Eve in 2009 Berry proposed while the couple were on holiday in India.

They were considered one of the industry's strongest couples and were expected to marry this winter.

But today, Sugababe Heidi Range and her radio and TV presenter fiancé Dave Berry announced they had split up after eight years together.

The pop star, 28, took to her Twitter page to break the news and wrote: 'Very sadly, after eight years together, myself and Dave decided to separate a few months ago.

Unlike his ex-fiancee, Berry didn't say anything on his Twitter page and instead wrote about going to Nandos with his radio colleagues.

Berry and Range met in 2003 and on New Year's Eve 2009, Berry proposed while the couple were on holiday in India.

They told OK! Magazine that they were planning a wedding in London in October 2011 with Heidi adding that she already had her eye on a designer dress.

She told the magazine: 'I haven’t tried any yet but when I did a gig in Barbados with the Sugababes, Vera Wang’s daughter came up to me and said, "My mum was at the gig and she’d love to make you a wedding dress". I nearly passed out, I’ve always dreamt of a Vera Wang wedding dress!'

In May this year, Berry said he loved living with his future bride, adding: 'She's amazing. She makes the house smell nice with all her lotions and potions.

'But it's good having time apart, too - nothing adds longevity to a relationship like a European tour, that's what I always say.'

No reason was given for the split and fans of the pair took to their Twitter page in their hundreds to pass on the news of their separation.

Both have exciting new projects to help them move forward and keep them busy over the next few months.

Heidi is currently training as one of the contestants of the next series of Dancing on Ice and then getting ready to promote the new Sugababes album next spring, while Berry will be preparing for some early starts when he takes over from Johnny Vaughan on the Capital FM weekday breakfast show.

Heidi Range is chilled out about her wedding plans
Heidi Range is chilled out about her wedding plans
Heidi Range has confessed she and fiance Dave Berry are so relaxed about their nuptials that they’re still looking for a wedding venue.
The Sugababe and her TV presenter future husband have been dating since 2003, but Heidi says they aren’t in any rush to tie the knot.
When asked if she was a bridezilla, Heidi replied: “No I’m not, I think that’s why we’ve been engaged for two years and still haven’t got married, we’re just still looking at venues.
“We hope to do it next winter because we want a winter wonderland type wedding, so if we find the right venue it will be next December.”
The Sugababes will be performing at the curtain call for West End musical Mamma Mia! next month as part of Pop Goes The Musical for Children In Need, and Heidi revealed the band can’t wait to belt out an Abba number.
“It’s just such a fun musical and there are so many songs that we can do with the three-part harmonies that really suit us,” she added.
“We went to watch it, Jade (Ewen) was in the middle of me and Amelle (Berrabah) and she had to console us because we were both crying.”

Dave Berry 'The Beat Goes On' interview: 'Sugababe Heidi will never sing for me'

Dave Berry 'The Beat Goes On' interview: 'Sugababe Heidi will never sing for me'

It's been quite a while since there was a truly great light entertainment show on TV that doesn't have Simon Cowell, dancing celebrities or the word reality associated with it. Dave Berry's karaoke gameshow The Beat Goes On (exec produced by Ant & Dec, no less) is hoping to fill that void, challenging members of the public to dance and sing their way to prizes.

We caught up with Dave to chat karaoke, his girlfriend Heidi Range and what Ant & Dec look like in their jeans.

Did you ever imagine in your wildest dreams you'd one day host a show with your own house band?
"Oh no!! Oh Alex, you must know how I feel. You phrased that question so brilliantly. No, not in my wildest dreams did I think that I would have my own dance troupe. Nor did I think the Saturday night TV gods Ant & Dec would allow me to call them the Boogie Berries.

"Ant & Dec are execs and when they said I would have my own house band, I was impressed. When they dropped the dance troupe bomb, I was automatically signing on the dotted line."

Were Ant & Dec very hands-on with the show?
"What a terrible thing to do to a presenter, be hands-on if you're Ant & Dec. But yes, they came down to a couple of recordings and they basically let us get on with it. They hung around... in their causal clothes. You haven't lived until you've seen Ant & Dec in their casual clothes.

"After the series wrapped, we went back to their house and had some champagne. They were really complimentary about the show and that was quite a moment in my career. I'm glad the boys were happy."

Do Ant & Dec ever not wear suits?
"That's exactly right, Alex, I was shocked! I was like, 'oh look at little Ant in his little jeans!' No, they're great bosses to work for. The first thing I want with a show is for people, viewers to enjoy it and celebrate it, but after that it's about having fun with the team and I try to make life for everyone as easy as possible.

"But when your execs are the Godfathers of Saturday night entertainment, it can add a little bit extra pressure... to say the least. But they're happy, that's the main thing."

Are you going to out them both as karaoke addicts?
"I think at Ant's house, he has a secret room and I'm sure in that secret room, it's like Lucky Voice in Soho and it's a karaoke den. The boys did get involved. They had a go on the Hotstepper, which is the only three-person dance machine in the world. That was a bit of fun when the cameras were not running. There was some fun to be had on set."

Why didn't you secretly leave the cameras running and film that?
"That's the problem with Ant & Dec, they are so powerful, I daren't go against them. If they knew I had that material, I would probably be dead right now."

What are you like on the karaoke?
"There is a reason I get paid to talk about music on the TV and radio and not make it. I know I can't sing. Some of the contestants on our show... nobody has clearly broken that news to them yet. But when I do get my arm twisted or have one too many Stella Artois, I tend to go down the 'Sympathy For The Devil' Rolling Stones route. Even with my tone deafness, I can't f**k up with a 'wooh! wooh!'"

Heidi Range of the Sugababes at the pre-Wimbledon Party held at The Roof Gardens
You haven't learnt anything from Heidi then?
"You'd think she'd pass on some tips. But the only thing I've learnt from her is how to change my bandmates and get away with it."

Does she ever stop you doing karaoke?
"I'm a free spirit, Alex. If I want to sing, not Heidi, not any other member of the Sugababes, past, present or future are going to stop me. What is quite frustrating [is that] Heidi has an amazing voice and is a talented singer. That's half of what Sugababes are about, they are great singers, not auto-tuned Saturdays.

"But Heidi will never sing for me. She won't ever entertain me and my friends, she won't ever do karaoke. Me and my mates are like, 'go on play 'Push The Button' you b*tch'. But she never plays along unfortunately."

That's massively disappointing!
"Well said, Alex! I can see we're going to get along well. What's the point in having a popstar girlfriend if you can't get her to sing for your mates?"

If you can't sing, can you dance?
"The problem with dancing is... I know I can't sing, but when I dance, I think I'm like Jay Kay from Jamiroquai. I like to think that I have some deep-rooted soul that gives me a natural timing and finesse on the dancefloor that is yet to be rivalled. However, I have seen myself on wedding videos and in national magazines dancing and I look like a total idiot.

"There's a great pic of me at Ashley and Cheryl's wedding and I thought I was in the zone and looking pretty damn hot, but the picture that was used in a national magazine.... well... I thought I was looking smooth doing a finger click. In reality, I'm in an awkward position looking really camp and there's Sol Campbell just stood looking at me with a quizzical look thinking, 'what the f**k does that guy think he's doing'. I know how bad a dancer I am, I've seen it in Sol Campbell's eyes."

What other projects are you working on?
"I've just finished the iTunes festival with Alexa Chung. This is what I learnt from Heidi about replacing the bandmates. The first series of that I did with Peaches Geldof. Then I did two with Fearne Cotton. Now I've moved on to Alexa Chung. It's just a revolving door. I've also just done some Beer And Pizza Club for ITV and my tailors that I own, October House, we open our first store in London next month. "

You look like a chap who enjoys his fashion...
"Yes I am. Not that I would ever consider myself a celebrity, but it's not me being paid to wear suits. It's a proper business that I'm running day-to-day. We're very lucky because without doing any PR, GQ and Esquire have done complimentary pieces and it's all gone really well.

"I love clothes and I love tailoring. I've never seen Mad Men, I should make that clear. I actually wrote an article for a website called 'Mad at Mad Men'. Do you ever wear a suit, Alex?"

Very rarely. I'm quite a scruff...
"I'm sure that's not true. I'm sure you look effortlessly cool. No, the thing is you can't wear a good suit these days without someone saying, 'oh, hey, Don Draper'. I'm like 'f**k off'!' The suit thing is really cool and I'm my own stylist for The Beat Goes On and all I need to do is get Ant & Dec wearing them and I'll be away and running."

The Beat Goes On starts tonight at 11pm on Channel 5

The Sugababes singer loves going on holiday to the ‘Big Apple’ with her fiance Dave Berry because she finds it such an exciting and romantic place.
She said: “New York is such an amazing place – me and Dave went there on our first holiday together. It was around Christmas and it was really so romantic. We went on a horse-drawn carriage and my favourite thing to do is to have a glass of champagne at Grand Central Station.”
Just as she has fallen in love with New York, she has also fallen for the delights of Spain – in particular Tapas food.
She revealed: “I’m really into tapas at the moment. We’ve got a really cute one right by our house, which does great seafood. It’s just like being on holiday.”

She's admitted to becoming 'obsessed' with planning her wedding.
So it was nice to see Sugababes star Heidi Range taking a night out from thinking about her upcoming nuptials to enjoy a night out with her fiancé Dave Berry.
The 27-year-old singer looked stunning in a Mango maxi dress, also worn by Rebecca Ferguson on The X Factor, as she posed on the red carpet with her beau.

The evening out at the 20th Annual Drapers Awards at Grosvenor House in London is likely to come as a welcome break from wedding planning for Heidi, who recently revealed she is hoping to have a winter ceremony in 2011.
She said earlier this year: 'I'm obsessed already. All I've done is look on the internet at wedding sites.
'As soon as we got engaged, the next day I had to go into WHSmith at the airport and buy a bridal magazine. I was on the plane looking really obvious.'

Heidi also described presenter Berry's proposal as a 'complete surprise', adding: 'He surprised me on New Year's Eve 2009 in Barbados.
'I was hoping that he might ask me sometime soon but I never thought it'd be on New Year's Eve. I'm so excited. I was crying and shaking.'
Maybe Heidi and Berry could pick up some wedding planning tips from Strictly Come Dancing's Brendan Cole and wife Zoe Cole Hobbs who were also at the awards.

Former Oasis star Liam Gallagher and his wife Nicole Appleton also made a rare red carpet appearance together at the event.
In fact, the evening was something of a date night for some of Britain's most famous celebrities.
But one person who went solo on the red carpet was Fearne Cotton, who went for a quirky look in a sheer pink shirt teamed with black trousers and a bowtie.
