Mark Meets: Exclusive Interview with Amelle Berrabah

We chat to the very bubbly Amelle Berrabah who is set to release her debut solo album this summer. The former girl band member chatted exclusively to us at MarkMeets about her time in the studio and gives a open honest account of what music means to her. She is keen to get back with the girls next year though is focused right now on her own music.

You made your name in a girl band (The Sugababes) and now your on your own! How does it feel to not have the other girls with you this time round.
It's definitely a strange feeling, I’m still getting used to is now to be fair cos I’m been writing the album since last year.

The first few sessions I had without them, I felt very weird just because normally we bounce ideas of each other and also harmony wise, 'I’m like Oh yeah that would sound good like that' or it needs some backing vocals just there'. When it's just you doing it's strange at the beginning, I've got used to it now but I do miss the girls. I saw them very recently and said (In a very upbeat girly voice) "I miss you guys, I miss you all". I'm enjoying it, I'm being really really picky with every little detail but I'm nearly there, I’m pretty much ready to be honest and I'm very very happy with it.

It doesn't really sound like what me and the girls did, it's definitely my own thing and my little weird world, so it represents me.

Your debut solo album is scheduled for release this summer, what can you tell us.
I was supposed to release it earlier but I just didn't feel ready. Like I said I’ve been really picky, I don't wanna feel half ready as it has to be right. I'll be starting promo at the end of June with my single and the rest will fit into place. I'm really excited and can't wait.

Who are you collaborating with?/Producers
I've worked with quite a few producers, there are a few I’m still in talks with at the moment collaboration wise including Tinchy as we're good friends but I want this one to go on my album now (Laughs) so that is definitely happening. There are also some other artists as well that we're finalising and seeing what the best one will be for me. Producer wise I was in LA last year and worked with 'The Game' who is one of the most amazing songwriters. I've worked with a couple of new producers as well...who I didn't take under my wing but you know when you just see talent and I’m literally like "I really wanna work with you", so I've done that on a couple of tracks and the rest of them are quite well known people, like Dr Luke who I'm talking with at the moment and some other big producers.

If they're a really good producer I don't really care how big their name is kind of thing. It's more about the music for me, I'm still really lucky to have worked with the producers on my album. There are a couple that I’ve worked with that 'Get Me', I try to tell them 'That's it :). I'm a bit of a strange one sometimes...(Laughs), unique xx

What is your music style?
Cos of me, what I listen too, it ranges from 'Rolling Stones, Kooks, Mary J Blige, My Life, Alicia Keys, so my music is so across the board it's ridiculous! I take influences. I'm one of them people who like something whether it's a real hard core pop track or drum and base bloody mixed dub-step up in there you know. I've gone with what's in my head really, some of the stuff is quite quirky and I do different accents in a couple of songs.
Some of the songs are not like a character but it's how I imagined the video would be singing it, so I almost invent different people when I sometimes write. There are a couple like that and I’m pretty sure that people won't even know it's me until you hear the real singing parts and they go "I recognise that tone", so some of the parts I done on purpose as being quirky.

There are a couple of really lovely ballads, big tempo ballads and really stripped back stuff as well, but it's more about what i fell like on the day really in the studio as my personality is quite random anyway. It fits together but each song is very different from the next.

Did you write many new tracks on the album?
I've written every song on the album apart from two as I co-wrote one and someone else wrote one. That's why it's more personal to me. I can genuinely say it’s my album, I wrote it from my experiences, a couple are about other people. It's definitely my life and how I see things from my own. It's very important to me this album.

Were you ever tempted to do cover versions?
Yes, funnily enough we’re talking about that at the moment and there are a couple of new ones that I came up with but I want to change them completely but they are very well known songs. There is one that is on the radio right now that I’m thinking I can do but a Jazz version of it, like a Ella Fitzgerald bluesy soulful kind of version to it. There will be more than one cover on the album.

Describe your 1st single in 5 words
There are two that we are in talks about for the first single, so okay...
One of them is one for the summer, it puts a smile on your face, makes you wanna dance, it just makes you smile it really does.
It's got really nice lyrics and words; I wrote is about someone really special to me...my sister (Laughs).
The other one is the complete opposite, it's quirky, different, fun, you still can't help dancing to it as it has a mad beat in it, the baseline is ridiculous! This is the one that you probably know is even me as I take on a very English accent in some parts of the song.

Are you looking forward to performing again?
I'm so looking forward to performing again. I'm a little bit nervous as well. I was talking to Heidi on her birthday and I said "You have to come to my festival cos I don't know that the hell I’m gonna do".
I'm sure once I go on stage it'll be absolutely fine. In my head already I know how I want things to be looking, what I want to wear. I have regular meetings with the label anyway about styling and ideas for photo shoots and stuff. Definitely gonna be putting on some shows. We're talking about a tour at the moment as well but it's a little bit early before we start the promo process and then we'll get onto proper dates like big shows and tour dates and things like that. I literally can't wait, the tour is my favourite thing to do as I absolutely love it.

Tinchy Stryder Ft. Amelle Berrabah - Never Leave You MUSIC VIDEO

Do you have any ideas for you music videos? and will the Hot pants make a return?
(Laughs) quite possibly, I'll probably do a little shakedown, Beyonce moment in a couple of videos (Laughs again).

Sugababes to reunite in 2014...What's the goss?
We're still talking, even now when i'm in the studio there are afew songs that I keep to one side because I can hear us singing
that as they don't feel right for me. All three of us are definitely up for it though we're all quite busy at the moment doing
our own thing, so it does look like mid-towards the end of next year we'll do another single or some shows and so yeah I’m really looking forward to that. We do regularly talk about it and so it will be happening.

Your quite a joker, can you tell us a Melly Joke?
Right now, okay....Of the top of my head, i'm a proper joke teller as well. You've got me, ok, ok, let me think straight. (Half a minute later)...I used to be addicted to soap, but I'm clean now...

Do you have a message for your fans?
I would like to say thank you for the support, there are regular names I see on my Twitter and things like that and they really stick by you and it means...when I say Thank you - it doesn't seem good enough as it doesn't express exactly how I feel, it's overwhelming to be honest especially when you go abit quite and working in the studio, your away and knowing that people are waiting for you. It means the words to me it really does. I hope I live up to the mark when I do release so they'll all be happy. (In an American accent "I'm so lucky to have fans like that"). Thank you, Thank you.

AMELLE TALKS to MAXIMUM POP about DEBUT ALBUM, SUGABABES, LITTLE MIX, STOOSHE & PARADE -

AMELLE TALKS DEBUT ALBUM, SUGABABES, LITTLE MIX, STOOSHE & PARADE

HER DEBUT SINGLE IS COMING IN SEPTEMBER!

COMMENTS
Last night at Tinchy Stryder’s headphone launch MP! caught up with Amelle Berrabah. Just minutes before she took to the stage with the Stryderman we quizzed her about what’s going on with the Sugababes, her solo plans, her views on the original Sugababes reforming and her thoughts on the new girlbands of today!
Hi Amelle! What brings you here this evening?
To support my man Tinchy, I’m so proud of him to have his set of headphones! It’s such a massive achievement; obviously everyone knows about the Dr. Dre ones so to have a headphone brand representing a big UK artist is great.
You had a massive hit single with Tinchy; what’s he like as a collaborator? He’s a very talented person. He’s a genius in music and I love working with him. I’ve done a track for his new album. When you click with someone it makes everything so much easier. He gets me and he gets my personality, I get him and we’ve always kept in contact, we message and stuff.
What’s going on with you and the girls?
All good, we’re not releasing anything until the end of next year. We haven’t got anything set in stone just at the moment. But I’ve been in the studio literally every single day for my solo album – tonight’s so much fun because I haven’t seen anyone in ages! I’ve nearly finished and my first release should be in the first week of September so I’m quite nervous but I’m really excited. I’ve literally put everything I have into it. I’ve taken my time with it; I said to the record label “you need to let me take my time to do my thing!”
What are Heidi and Jade up to?They’re taking a bit of time off. I think Jade is gonna start doing her solo album quite soon and Heidi’s doing a bit of presenting and things like that, so yeah, we’re all very happy!
Are you looking forward to hearing what the original Sugababes are going to come out with?
Do you know what, yeah I am! I’ve got no bad blood; I’m not someone who’s like that. No, I think they’re all very talented. It’s interesting ‘cos I haven’t heard anything from Siobhan in so long – I’m quite intrigued because she’s so talented, her songwriting ability is amazing and she’s done a lot of songwriting for other artists. I’ve been following her silently for a while. Mutya’s obviously got one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. And Keisha, a very talented person who’s also got a great voice. I’m intrigued, I’m intrigued…in a good way!
Can we ask you about some of the newer girlbands on the scene? What do you think of Little Mix?
I love ‘em. I absolutely love those girls. Even during X Factor, I was like “they need to win”. They are stars, each and every one of those girls, and to top it off as well they’re nice people. When you meet people in this industry sometimes the vibe they give off…hmm(!), but Little Mix are beautiful girls, really down to earth and good people.
And what about Stooshe girls?
Stooshe, they’re the three girls, yeah?
Yes.
I nearly swore there, I absolutely love them! Love them.
They swore in their first single so you’re allowed to swear if you like.
Okay, I f***ing love them. They remind me of a modern day Supremes but with a twist. I love their new single. I think they’re very different, they’re fresh and they’ve got the most amazing voices. Apart from Little Mix and the new [old] Sugababes coming up, there’s not many bands who sing, you know? These girls are the competition. Each of those three are as talented as each other and their voices are insane.
Another girl band you may remember from last year, Parade, are also on the comeback trail.
[Excited] Oh are they?
Yes, they’ve been working with MNEK, Ed Drewett and Tim Powell from Xenomania.
Nice! The one I always remember is the one with the short hair, she’s absolutely beautiful and has a lot of star quality about her… Sian! I really like them but I haven’t heard much from them so I’m quite looking forward to hearing what they’ve got!
Thank you, Amelle!

Amelle 's Exclusive Interview and photos with Dean Piper

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Sugababe Amelle Berrabah

Posted by Dean Piper On January 25th, 2011

Sugababes are currently working hard on their new album – the follow-up to last year’s Sweet 7 – and I caught up with one third of the gorgeous trio, Amelle Berrabah, to find out how the girls are getting on.The star has teamed up with www.showyourstyle.co.uk to raise awareness of cervical cancer. We had a natter about keeping fit and that rumoured romance with Alex Reid…

What’s your involvement with the Fight Cervical Cancer in Style campaign?

I learnt so much from the campaign last year and some of the facts were genuinely shocking. I want to help raise awareness to get women and girls out there to go to screenings and lower the risks of them getting cervical cancer. It’s trying to get people to take action now and take five minutes out of their day to go and get a screening. It’s the most common cancer in women aged between 20 and 29 – eight women a day get diagnosed and three women a day actually die. I think that’s quite shocking. It’s not the nicest thing to go through but for the sake of five minutes it can save your life.

Do you have a personal involvement with the campaign?

My sister had an abnormal scan four years ago and that was the first time I’d even heard about cervical cancer to be honest. They had to monitor her closely and she had the abnormal cells lasered off in the end. Luckily she’s is fine now but it’s just the thought of what might have been if she hadn’t gone for a screening. Over a third of girls haven’t even heard of the HPV virus and I find that really interesting. It’s not about spreading fear but it’s really trying to get people informed with the right information. It was only with Jade Goody dying, bless her soul, that people started to think ‘Oh this is dangerous’.

Do you make an effort to keep yourself fit and healthy?

I enjoying going to the gym but it’s more because you feel better about yourself. It’s good to have a nice balance – I try to eat healthy but if I want to have something that isn’t healthy then I’m going to eat it. I’m not obsessed and it’s about being happy with yourself. It’s a strange thing as being in the limelight means a slight change is noticed straight away.

I can’t wait for your new album! How are you getting on with it?

We’re in the studio and are really excited about it. It’s still early days and we haven’t got a particular sound – whatever we love, we record. Hopefully it will take about two-three months to get ready but we really want to take our time on it and make this the best album we’ve ever done. We want to work with some really cool producers and new ones too as it’s really important because then they give you the ideas that haven’t been snatched yet.

Will there be any collaborations on the album?

Tinie Tempah would be amazing and he’s very talented and quirky. He doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. I’m a massive fan of his.

Have you got your wellies at the ready to play any of the festivals this summer?

We really want to do lots of festivals this year. We’ve already put in for V festival and I’d really like us to do Isle Of Wight again. If we could play Glastonbury that would be amazing and one to remember for years and years. I’ve never even gone, let alone performed!

I can’t see a bling ring on your finger so I’m assuming there was no truth in the rumours you were proposed to by boyfriend Tom Benn at Christmas?

No we are just chilled and will get married when the time feels right – which is not for a few years! We had our anniversary last week and when the time is right the time is right but at the minute we’re just chilled and focused on work. We’re very happy. Maybe next year, eh! We had a gorgeous meal for our anniversary.

What did Tom make of recent reports that you were ‘cosying’ up to Alex Reid on a night out?

Oh god, that was so funny because I’ve known Alex since I was eleven years old. He was my kick-boxing instructor for six years. My mum knows his mum and my brother was in the same year at school with him. I know for a fact he does not see me in that way and he knows for a fact that I didn’t see him in that way. It would almost be a bit weird if we did – it basically would be incest! I think Katie would have known straight away that it was just a rumour as she knows we’re friends.

Amelle is proud to support the 1st year anniversary of the Fight Cervical Cancer in Style campaign; a national campaign to educate and raise awareness about cervical cancer developed by GlaxoSmithKline, in association with Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, the UK charity dedicated to cervical cancer. Currently, eight women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and nearly three women die of the disease every day in the UK but the UK cervical screening programme is thought to be saving up to 4,500 lives per year. Sugababes: 'Cheryl deserves more respect!'

Friday 26 March 2010
The Sugababes are undoubtedly one of Britain’s best-loved pop acts, and, despite numerous changes to the original line-up, have maintained an edge that kept them well and truly at the top of their game!

But, after a tumultuous 2009, the future of the band seemed to be somewhat in limbo –at least if tabloid headlines were to be believed.

So we were slightly apprehensive when we went to meet the girls themselves at the legendary Abbey Road Studios – would chatting to the girls be a bit like navigating a minefield of sore subjects? Would we get caught up in catfights or diva tantrums?

We needn’t have worried – as we walk into Studio 2, which has seen legends like The Beatles and Pink Floyd work their magic in its four walls, Amelle Berrabah and Heidi Range immediately jump up from the sofa to greet us! New member Jade Ewen isn’t feeling well and is off sick – what a shame!

The girls look fab in skinny jeans and heels, and while Heidi is working a casual-chic pale-pink blazer, Amelle has opted for a sportier look in an oversized grey sweater. Both look absolutely gorgeous – and we can’t help but notice the absolutely mahooossive diamond engagement ring on Heidi’s wedding finger!

The ‘Babes just made a teenager’s dream come true by hanging out with 15-year-old Abbie and giving her tips for her own musical career.

Abbie, who won the Windows 7 Sing, Snap and Shake it singing competition to live a day like the Sugababes would – including a stay at the swanky Mayfair Hotel, a shopping trip to Selfridges and dinner at posh eaterie Nobu – is over the moon as she is having her picture taken between two of the coolest girl in Pop!

Seems that the ballsy Sugababes aren’t so scary after all… And so we sit down for a good chin-wag about cheating celebs, scary spinning classes and the girls’ fashion obsessions!

There have been an awful lot of cheating scandals recently… what would you do in such a situation?
Amelle: Go. Without fail.

Were you surprised by any of them?
Heidi: I think you can’t comment or say what’s right or wrong in other people’s relationships, but the one that got me was the John Terry one. His wife was all over him the week after, kissing him and cuddling him like nothing happened. That surprised me. I wouldn’t even be able to look at the person.

Amelle: It makes you feel uncomfortable even looking at it…

Heidi: Every couple works through whatever happens in their relationship, but I found that quite shocking.

So what do you think of Cheryl’s decision to leave Ashley?

Heidi: I think Cheryl deserves more respect than what she’s been given.

Amelle: For sure!

Heidi: She’s a beautiful girl. She’s talented. She doesn’t need to be treated like that. I think he’s silly for doing what he’s done.

Amelle: But she needs to work it out for herself, she has to do whatever makes her happy. But from an outsider’s point of view, I agree with Heidi, she definitely deserves a lot more respect.

What’s it like being at the famous Abbey Road studios, where legends like The Beatles and Pink Floyd have recorded?

Heidi: I’ve been here before to do live radio sessions – but we just realised that we were here the day me and Keisha met Amelle for the first time when she joined the band!

Amelle: When we got to the front door all the memories came flooding back.

Those must have been quite exciting memories for you, Amelle?

Amelle: Oh definitely! They’re all good memories for sure but I can’t believe it’s been nearly four and a half years now – oh my god!

How’s the new- well, new-ish - line-up working out? Is Jade settling in okay?

Amelle: She’s really good…

Heidi: Unfortunately she’s not well today, but usually we’re having a lot of fun together and enjoy what we’re doing. It’s all good.

That’s great to hear. Considering the history of the studio, who out of all the legends who have recorded here would you have liked to collaborate with?

Heidi: The Beatles, obviously! (laughs)

Amelle: That would have been amazing! Definitely Jimi Hendrix. Even Mary J Blige, I saw a picture of her on the wall, that would have been amazing as well. We could do a soulful track.

What about any current artists – who would you like to team up with?

Amelle: We’ve just been signed to Roc Nation in America, Jay-Z’s label. Recording with the big boss would be amazing.

Heidi: Or Beyonce!

Amelle: Or both of them. There you go.

Heidi: We’ve got a collaboration on the album with Sean Kingston, which was good fun to do, but I’d really like us to do one with a band.

Amelle: A proper rocky number, Kings of Leon stylee?

Heidi: I’d love to do something like that, something a bit different.

Your latest album sounds quite different from the original Sugababes sound…

Heidi: We’ve changed with every album, because obviously music does move on and we want to keep it fresh for the fans - and ourselves. This album is more of a party album I suppose… we went over to America and had a ball when we were doing it!

Amelle: The previous album, Catfights and Spotlights, is a lot more chilled. But like Heidi said, music is always changing and have to keep pushing yourself that little bit more with brilliant new artists on the scene, like Lady GaGa. But we had a lot of fun and we really love it. It’s a nice, feel good album.

Heidi: God knows where we’ll take the next one!

Amelle: Imagine if we did hard metal!

You often have to wear rather skimpy costumes – do you get nervous about baring it all?

Amelle: Yes! On video shoots you are surrounded by loads of blokes, so you do get embarrassed sometimes! In certain tops you can’t move your arm because it’ll pop open. The leotard in About A Girl was a nightmare – I had to hold myself in every two seconds!

Heidi: But we’re never forced to wear something - we choose what we want to wear. Obviously our stylist tries to push us a bit more to more extreme outfits than what we wear walking down the road.

Is your personal style quite different to the kind of outfits you wear on the stage?
Heidi: I would say it’s a bit more toned down.

Amelle: It’s like a tamer version. We wouldn’t be walking around in a leotard in everyday life!

What fashion trends do you like?

Heidi: I’m all for the shoulder pads!
Amelle: I love leather jackets.
Heidi: You’ve got about twenty!
Amelle: I love them!
Heidi: My fashion obsession are heels and handbags!

What’s your favourite pair of heels or handbags you own?
Heidi: My Chanel handbags… I have to convince myself that it’s ok to spend that much money because I can hand them down through the family - they’re classics!

What have you bought recently that you absolutely love?

Amelle: I’ve bought two pairs of Louboutin boots that I absolutely love – they come up to the knee and I got two because I like both colours. But they’re a good buy because they suit a lot of things and won’t go out of fashion.

How do you stay in shape? Do you work out a lot?
Heidi: I have to! I do spinning classes - they’re scary at first but once you get into them you get a little bit addicted. I love them now. I haven’t been as strict lately though as I usually am. But Amelle and I are preparing to do a big cycle.

Amelle: A 54 MILE cycle for charity!

Heidi: It’s in June and we’re both kind of nervous about it! We’ve got to work ourselves up to 30 miles before the race, so we best get on the bikes next week!

Amelle: We’re cycling from London to Brighton – and then we’re going to stay in a hotel and chill the hell out!

Could see yourself doing a Girls Aloud style Gap year to pursue solo projects?

Amelle: At the moment we’ve got the next couple of years planned out for us, we literally know what we’re doing this time next year! But if it felt right to take a break then we’d be quite open to that.

Heidi: But not this year!

Would you like to try something really different, like acting or going into fashion?

Heidi: We’ve got some fashion-related projects coming up but we’re not allowed to say what…

Amelle: It’s exciting – we’re going to have a lot of fun!

Toni Braxton Interview - I hilighted one paragraph

Toni Braxton
Tuesday, March 23 2010, 15:40 GMT

By Nick Levine, Music Editor

Record sales in excess of 40 million, a trophy shelf groaning under the weight of six Grammys, international smashes with the likes of 'Breathe Again', 'He Wasn't Man Enough' and of course 'Un-Break My Heart', then... nothing. But now she's back! Last week Toni Braxton touched down in London for an exclusive playback of her new album - it's called Pulse and it's her first in almost five years - so we just had to grab the opportunity for a catch-up.

How does it feel to be back? Any nerves?
"It feels great, no nerves! I've been looking forward to it for some time. I didn't think I'd be able to perform again after my heart scare, so I'm really excited."

How serious was your heart scare?
"It was pretty scary. I was hospitalised for about 14 days. The first diagnosis was, 'You have... some long word I can't remember anymore'. I said, 'What's the cure?' and they said, 'Well, you need a heart transplant'. I was cuckoo for about a day or two, but then they came back and said, 'We misdiagnosed you - what you had was actually a heart attack'. I was like, 'I'll take that! Yeah!' I was actually very fortunate that it was just a little heart attack."

How long did your recovery take?
"It takes a while because you have to go through cardiac rehab. If you break your knee, you have therapy on your knee, and it's the same for your heart. They teach you how to lead a healthier lifestyle and put tubes and wires all over you so they can see how your heart does under stress."

Did you have to change your lifestyle to any great extent?
"Slightly at first, but now medication maintains it. I can live a totally normal life and do everything I want to do just as long as I take my medication. My body will give me signals if it gets weak or fatigued, so I know when I need to take a break. It's OK."

It's been five years since your last album - are you happy to call this a comeback?
"I'm fine with 'comeback' - whatever it needs to be called! It all happened very fast for me first time around, so I never really got to enjoy it, whereas now I'm really taking my time and smelling it and living it all fully."

How long have you been working on the album?
"It's like a bottomless cup of coffee! I signed my deal with Atlantic Records when I did Dancing With The Stars in September 2008 and I've been working on it since then. I must have recorded more than 30 tracks for it by now!"

Have you decided on the final tracklisting?
"We're doing that as we speak - I think we have about seven songs confirmed, but we haven't got the ten yet. The album was supposed to come out in February, but we held it back because seven of the ten songs we picked were leaked. We decided to go back to the studio, record four or five more songs and then pick. Now we send everything via Federal Express - nothing's going through the internet - and that's why none of the new songs have leaked so far."

What's the balance between ballads and club cuts like?
"It can be challenging getting that balance right, but I think we did a really good job on [my 1996 album] Secrets. Everyone forgets that 'You're Makin' Me High' was on the same album as 'Un-Break My Heart'. You have to make sure it sequences well, because you don't want to have a dance song and then all of a sudden a big, classic ballad."

The first UK single is a track called 'Yesterday'. What's the story behind it?
"Well, I heard the song and it was written from a guy's perspective, so I said, 'Nice song - let me rework it'. I changed it up and made it a girl's song. I'm going through a separation, and it's not my story per se, but I definitely can relate to it in the sense of starting over. I wanted to have strength when I sang it - I didn't want to be a wimp!"

It feels like time for you to record a big female-female duet. Is there anything being lined up?
"Me and Alicia Keys are talking about it - well, my people are talking to Alicia's people because I play piano and obviously she plays too. I've been playing since I was about nine years old so I really can play. Maybe we could do something at an award show and people will see us collaborate that way? We'll see."

How about our own diva, Leona Lewis?
"I love her! I prefer her first album to the new one though. Actually, the possibility of she and I touring together was mentioned when I was in New York a couple of months ago for the VH1 Divas show. Her people were talking to my people and said maybe we should put on a tour together, so who knows? I'm just excited to have these options and possibilities open to me."

Finally, do you still enjoy singing 'Un-Break My Heart'?
"I actually do - though I don't really have to sing it at concerts now because the fans sing it! I just sing 'Don't leave me in all this pain' and it's over! The audience jumps in and pretty much sings the whole song. They do wait for the last note though, so I try to really nail that one!"

Toni Braxton returns with 'Yesterday' on May 3.

Sugababe singer Jade Ewen on her blindness torment and death threats

Sugababe singer Jade Ewen on her blindness torment and death threats

SUGABABES star Jade Ewen has spoken of her fears any children she has could be born blind.

The 22-year-old singer has also told of her hurt at vile abuse and death threats from fans who were against her joining the band.

Jade, one third of Britain's biggest selling female pop group, grew up as carer to her blind parents - Scots Italian dad Trevor and Jamaican mum Carol.

She has also lived with the knowledge she could go blind and that she could pass the condition on to her children.

Jade, who replaced Keisha Buchanan in the Sugababes, said while her father was born blind, her mother was blind in one eye but very capable.

That was until seven years ago when Carol got myasthenia gravis - a rare condition affecting the nerves that supply the muscles around the body.

Overnight Carol went from being able to care for her family to being unable to get out of bed or even open her eyes.

As the oldest child, Jade took on the role of caring for her siblings.

She said: "My dad was born completely blind. Then my mum came down with myasthenia - for me it became like having two blind parents.

"I remember trying to do my GSCEs and having to do exams early so that I could go and bring my little brother home from school while my mum was in hospital."

"There is a one in three chance that one of us might have sight problems.

"It's possible that I may be a carrier and my kids could be affected."

Jade joined Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah in the Sugababes six months ago and the group are set to enjoy chart success tomorrow when Sweet 7, her first album as part of the trio, hits the charts.

But Jade's joy has been tempered by death threats and abuse from fans who were against her joining the group.

Jade, dating Ricky Norwood, who plays Fatboy in EastEnders, said: "It's fair enough for fans to have an opinion on the new line-up but, when they say they want to kill me, that's a bit much.

"I've had people say things like, 'It's a good thing your dad can't see your ugly mug'. People say racist things or that they want to hurt my family members.

"My mum struggles with anything negative. I tell her even the biggest artists like Beyonce get criticism."

Jade said she'd never have been a success if her parents hadn't helped her. She added: "My family have been so supportive. It's only as I have got older that it sinks in how much they gave up and how much time they invested.

"My mum and dad lived off benefits, so any money we had was tight. For them to spend it on dance lessons for me showed how much they supported me.

"It couldn't have been the easiest thing to tell their child she can pursue acting or singing when it is not a given that she is going to be successful. It was a big risk.

"I'm really happy they stood by me because there were times when I thought I should get a normal job."

Recalling the moment she found out she would join the Sugababes, Jade said: "I was told, 'Something has come up. You have got to get on a plane now. We've got an opportunity for you but it would mean going to LA now, shooting a video tomorrow and being in the Sugababes.

"I remember being really scared but I agreed to go. I wasn't sure and I remember doing the video and thinking, 'It's too late now, I guess I'm in the Sugababes'."

Jade Ewen Interview 11.10.09

New Sugababe Jade Ewen, 21, on why she craves killer curves

11/10/2009

HAIR "My hair is naturally extremely curly but I often have it blow-dried, straightened and coloured for photo shoots and videos, which makes it really dry. I use Kérastase Complete Nutrition Shampoo, £10.27, for very dry hair, which stops it from breaking and makes it look shiny and healthy."

FACE "I'm mixed race but quite light skinned so any blemishes are very noticeable. Mac Select Cover-up, £12, is the only make-up I wear on my face. I prefer the natural look most of the time, but when I'm tired this helps me look fresh and awake."

LIPS "I swear by a lovely lip gloss called Lip Cushion by Jelly Pong Pong, £5. It's also great for split ends and moisturising nails and cuticles. I used it on my hair the other day when I ran out of serum. It saves having to carry loads of different products around with me!"

BODY "I'm a size 8 and naturally slim because I have a high metabolism. From around the age of 14 people have been telling me I look skinny and asking if I have eating problems, but I don't. It's made me very conscious of my body. In the past six months I've put on a few pounds - I think that's come with age. I'm really happy about it because I've always wanted to be curvy."

LEGS "My legs are my favourite part of my body. I've danced since I was three and they're toned, quite supple and look good in high heels - they're definitely my best asset. Plus, when I get back from holiday they stay tanned for a long time."

Jade Ewen: I didn't join Sugababes for it to be over in five minutes

Jade Ewen, 22, is the latest addition to the ever-changing Sugababes line-up. She represented Britain in last year's Eurovision Song Contest, coming fifth, and launched a brief solo career before replacing Sugababe Keisha Buchanan. New album Sweet 7 is released today.

..You’ve had a busy year. Have you taken it all in?

Not until the album launch party, I was just so busy working. It didn’t really sink in until I saw the posters and the hard copy of the album with my picture on it. It was a weird feeling.

Was giving up your solo career a difficult decision?

It was in that I believed in my music but joining the Sugababes was like winning the Lottery. I’m sure if I want to go solo again in the future I’ll be able to but I wanted to join the Sugababes – it’s better than I could have done on my own. I’d recorded 90 per cent of my album and my single came out two days after I joined the group so the solo stuff was well under way. Never mind.

Are you happy with your new saucy image?

I wasn’t overly keen to begin with but I’m used to it now. I needed to get away from that Eurovision look, which wasn’t me anyway, but you can’t sing an Andrew Lloyd Webber ballad in a miniskirt. I’ve always been really skinny and no one’s ever said I’m sexy, so to be told: ‘We’re going to make you sexy and get your legs out,’ was an adjustment.

Any outfits you weren’t keen on?

I was very nervous about the outfit I wore at the cervical cancer charity show. It looked fine from the front because it had a lot of detail – but I didn’t realise how revealing it was until I saw the pictures in the papers.

Why did you want to be a singer?

My dad’s blind and my mum’s partially sighted, so a lot of entertainment in our house was music, we didn’t watch much TV. I’ve sung for as long as I can remember. I was a massive fan of Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey when I was a child.

Are you really going to lose the rights to the Sugababes name to the original line-up?

As far as I know the label owns the name, it’s not down to us or the previous line-up.My experience ofthe last year shows you shouldn’t worry about things until they happen.

Will the day come when you will all sing together as a sixpiece?

Ha! I doubt it. Who knows, they might all say: ‘Let’s reunite!’ It’d be interesting to see it happen.

What’s been your worst moment on stage?

When I first joined we did a show in Leeds. Amelle was in Austria so it was just me and Heidi. I was terrified about how the fans would react. They turned out to be really nice. I thought they’d shout abuse but they didn’t. Heidi did a little speech about the line-up change and why Amelle couldn’t be there and she suddenly started crying. I didn’t know her that well at this point and didn’t know what to do, if I should just stand there and keep smiling. I went over, hugged her and said: ‘It’ll all be all right.’ No matter what’s happened, Heidi and Keisha had eight years together in the group so it was like a break-up, it was still quite raw.

How long do you think the Sugababes have got left?

I didn’t join for it to be over in five minutes. As long as we keep putting out good music I don’t see why it couldn’t last for another five or ten years.

Are you a feminist?

Yes, I’d say so. There’s always this thing that girls are quick to turn on each other, I feel guys stick together more, so I encourage that sisterhood vibe among my friends.

Have you ever been attacked by an animal?

I did a children’s wildlife TV programme when I was 14. I was holding a cockatoo and it went absolutely mental and started pecking huge chunks of flesh out of my hand. I’m not a fan of birds now.

Sugababes 8/3/2010 - Interview 4Music

We chat to Sugababes Mon 8 March 2010 - Interview

Listen now Since original Sugababe Keisha Buchanan was ousted from the band last September, all eyes have been on new addition Jade Ewen. As she prepares to release her second single with the band, we find out how she's settled in and what Heidi and Amelle think of the new album Sweet 7.

Q: You have now all been 'the new member of the Sugababes' at some point. What is that experience like?

Heidi: I think it's been a different situation for each of us. When I joined, we were signed together and recorded the album together. You guys were kind of thrown into it.

Amelle: I had a tour to do straight away. And Jade had a video.

Jade: You don't have time to digest it or think about it. You just have to get on with it. It's only when you get a break, like Christmas time, that it sinks in. Its better that you just go into it blindly.

Q: How has the fan reaction been, Jade?

I feel it's positive now. At the beginning I felt they resented me - and I understand it - because they loved Keisha and loved the band as it was, so it's difficult for them to see a new line-up and hear new vocals. It must have been weird for them and it was weird for me. But now they seem really positive!

Q: And have you been brushing up on the Sugababes back-catalogue?

Jade: When I first joined, it never crossed my mind that I'd have to sing the old songs. I thought I'd just have to learn the new album. I didn't realise there were six other albums. And you think you know the singles and then you realise you've been singing them wrong for years. And you can't get away with it on stage as the Sugababes fans are hardcore and they know every single word.

Q: You release your new album Sweet 7 in March. It was basically finished when you joined, Jade. What was your first impression when you heard it?

Jade: That was the deciding factor on whether I was going to join the band or not. I wanted to hear the music beforehand. The management played me the album and I absolutely loved it. Even if I wasn't in the band, I would buy the album as I just like the music, which I think is important.

Heidi: It's really like a party album. It's quite uplifting, I suppose. It's a feel-good album, something that you'd put on when you're getting ready for a night out. Lyrically, it's quite cheeky.

Q: The new single from the album is Wear My Kiss. You've already released Get Sexy and About a Girl. How hard has it been choosing the singles?

Jade: It's hard!

Heidi: It is with this one as there's a lot that we want to release.

Jade: There are only so many songs you can release though.

Heidi: There's probably another four that we'd love to be singles just because we want people to hear what's on the album.

Jade: We'd love Thank You For The Heartbreak and Little Miss Perfect to be singles.

Q: What else have you got coming up?

Heidi: We're not doing a Sugababes tour this year. We may start planning one for early next year, but we're going to do promotion in Asia. I went to Singapore with one of the previous line-ups...

Amelle: I love that that's how you described it...

Heidi: Ok, I went to Singapore with Keisha and Mutya. But it's a first for me, Amelle and Jade. We're starting off in India and its going to be amazing.

Interview by Colin Gentry.

The single Wear My Kiss is out now. The album Sweet 7 is released on March 15th.

NEW SUGABABE - Jade Ewen Interview

UK Eurovision entrant & new Sugababe Jade Ewen chats to Ollie Hayes.

Sugababes interview The Scotsman 8.3.10

Interview: The Sugababes - Band or a Brand?

Published Date: 08 March 2010
By Alice Wyllie
After numerous band shake-ups, a string of hit singles and a lot of hard work, the Sugababes are finally discovering that life can be sweet

The current line-up of the Sugababes, Heidi Range, Amelle Berabbah, and Jade Ewen

There are some topics that will always plague certain celebrities. These are the awkward, personal questions that interviewers are often instructed not to ask by said celebrities' "people". Rebellion is met with a grimace at best and at worst, an abrupt end to the interview.

For Jennifer Aniston that recurring topic is Brangelina. For Cheryl Cole, it's her husband's alleged infidelities. And for the Sugababes – the most successful British girl band of the 1990s – the one question that threatens to follow them for the rest of their careers concerns their apparently ever-changing line-up, which for good or ill has come, in part, to define the band.

The three young women who are sitting in front of me today on a sofa piled high with velvet cushions in a private members' club in London are not the same three young women who would have been here were I meeting the Sugababes ten years ago.

In terms of sales, the trio – known for their stable of solid, high-calibre and ultra-catchy pop hits – are the biggest British girl band since the Spice Girls. They have a string of floor-filling singles (including Overload, Push the Button and About You Now) behind them, and their latest album Sweet 7 is sure to be another success, packed as it is with radio-friendly tracks including the current release, Wear My Kiss.

However, these achievements have been overshadowed by a line-up that's changed beyond recognition over the years. Indeed, the Sugababes have become the unwilling poster child for the ultimate in manufactured pop: a brand, not a band.

There have never been more than three members of the band at any one time, but there have been six members in total. Confused? You will be.

The original line-up, formed in 1998, consisted of Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhan Donaghy, who soon left and whose spot was taken by Heidi Range. Buena parted company with the other girls five years ago and Amelle Berabbah joined. Then last September Buchanan, the last original member of the group, was replaced by 22-year-old aspiring pop star and ex-Eurovision contestant, Jade Ewen.

The details on that last departure have been a little hazy but Range, 26 and Berabbah, 25, are keen to set the record straight.

"People think that Keisha was kicked out but it was me and Amelle who left," says Range patiently. "Yeah, we just couldn't take it any more," adds Berabbah.

Before we enter dangerous territory, Range interjects with a firm: "It was just not a good environment to be in. Obviously I was with Keisha for over eight years so there were some brilliant times but the last year of us being together it was just really bad and it just got too much. You have to say 'this isn't worth it'. Life's too short to feel like this on a daily basis."

Berabbah emphatically agrees (she is the most outspoken of the three).

"We could not have gone on any further," she says. "It was just so hard and we didn't even find out until after that people we worked with were about to leave themselves because they couldn't take it any more. No-one should have taken how much we took to be honest … It just got to the point where we were unhappy for so long."

It is clear – despite never being expressed explicitly – that Buchanan was extremely difficult to work with. This confirms suspicions that fans have had for the past decade since Donaghy departed. Certainly there's a strong sense of harmony between the three women who sit in front of me today.

They sit spaced out evenly on the long, plush sofa, Heidi Range in the middle, flanked by the two newer members, with barely-touched bowls of edamame beans sitting on a low table in front of them. They are glossy, smiley and, as has come to be the standard for any girl band, extremely beautiful.

Amelle Berabbah, the edgiest-looking, with a funky short haircut, is wearing a leather bomber jacket and Ugg boots. Jade Ewen – coltish with an endearing scar at the top of her nose – hides behind tumbling black hair and is dressed down, but for a pair of six-inch heels. Heidi, who seems to play something of a maternal role in relation to the other two, is tanned and blonde, in a stretchy black satin shirt, skinny jeans and killer heels.

the previous Sugababes line-up consisted of Heid Range, Amelle Berabbah, and Keisha Buchanan
They interact comfortably, and there is a clear hierarchy of experience. More challenging questions might be answered by Range, and when Ewen seems a little unsure of a response, she is encouraged by the other two. For want of a less worthy-sounding way to describe their relationship, there seems to be a sense of sisterhood between the girls, and Range and Berabbah in particular seem to revel in it, perhaps having been deprived of it for so long.

They are, as is so often the case, three very nice girls from working-class backgrounds who haven't let fame go to their heads. But then, when it comes to showbiz, they know exactly what it's like to step from obscurity into the spotlight, joining an established, successful and very famous band. In each case, the more experienced two members have been able to coach the newest recruit on the hazards of being a Sugababe.

One such pitfall has to be the fickle nature of life in the public eye. And the mere fact that each girl has replaced an existing member of the band is a reminder of their own longevity within the Sugababes. While Queen are much diminished without Freddie Mercury, and the Beatles could not have continued without the talents of Lennon and McCartney, the fact remains that the Sugababes' brand has not been damaged by the revolving door of members. Surely this stark fact makes current band members feel uneasy?

Range fields this one: "When I joined I was always the new girl, until Amelle came to join us. And she was still getting called the new girl until Jade arrived. And we're not going to get another new girl. Jade's always going to be our new girl!"

Funnily enough I believe them. While Buchanan has yet to tell her side of the story, it seems to be the case that the Sugababes have been plagued by the behaviour of one member who is no longer with them, and the girls left carrying the torch are still having to answer questions about the situation. Indeed, had it not been for Buchanan, the original line-up might never have changed.

Certainly I get the impression that they've had their last reshuffle, not least because another change would tip the entire situation into farce. It's almost as if these three young women were always meant to be the Sugababes; it just took them a while to get here.

Ewen has by all accounts fitted in well (which is impressive – within 48 hours of being asked to join the band she was filming a music video with them in LA).

"I felt really restricted, actually," she says honestly. "You've got the part already designated to you, a part that was never written with me in mind so it's not necessarily suited to my voice and what I can do. So I felt like I couldn't really demonstrate what I was capable of. And on top of that you have criticism of course, which you get all the time – people saying it's not as good as the original. But of course it's never going to be as good as the original because it wasn't written for me. All I can do is put my spin on it."

She is understandably tentative. She is the youngest and least experienced, and the older two quickly step in to offer some support.

"I don't feel like that when I listen to it," says Range, placing a reassuring hand on Ewen's knee. Berabbah shakes her head vigorously: "Not at all. It's because you are being constantly compared to someone else. I got it as well. And it's like you're your own person, you're a singer and you sing how you sing, simple as that. And I think you've done an amazing job, you really have."

Ewen smiles and nods bashfully. She's been reassured. It's rather sweet. Indeed it's difficult to describe these three women without resorting to saccharine adjectives. They're very much girls next door.

They're ultra-polite. And they laugh. A lot. They are three people who have, to an extent, been set free, and they can't wipe the grins off their faces.

They have their complaints of course. The issue of nasty remarks from Twitter users comes up more than once. As does the tendency for celebrity magazines to circle their physical imperfections in photographs. But they seem pretty happy with their lot.

"It does take over your whole life, of course," says Berabbah. "Like any problem, sometimes you just need time." She is referring to a break she insisted upon taking at the end of last year when the pressure got to her and she retreated to a spa for a few weeks to take stock of her life.

"People think you're a machine but you've got to keep going," adds Ewen sympathetically. "When Amelle went away I don't think that people understood that they had been together for five years with Amelle and Keisha and eight for Heidi and it was like going through a break-up for them. And instead of having time to sort of grieve and get over that they've just had to start again straight away, with me as the new member, and keep going and just carry on smiling."

Berabbah continues: "They don't think you're human sometimes. When I was a kid, if I watched interviews with celebrities and they're going 'yeah there's loads of pressure...' I was like, 'stop your bloody moaning! You've got everything you could possibly want.' But then as soon as you are in it you do realise that you are human. Things do hurt you still and if you have got a problem you do have to go out and pretend that everything's OK. So it can be hard sometimes."

So, the band having dominated British pop music for the past ten years, what do these girls hope to achieve in the new decade? Here, both Berabbah and Ewen look to Range, who replies with a simple "We want to be doing it, but enjoying it."

It sounds straightforward enough, but it seems Range has been unable to enjoy much of her success until this point. She continues: "There have been many amazing times in the past with the band, but I do find it really sad to think that I've been in the group for nine years and it's taken that long for us all to want the same thing and to feel comfortable."

The three women smile before Amelle says: "And in the last few months we've become really good friends. We've been out a few times out of work, we've been on holiday together. We're so happy, so excited and we all want the same thing. "It feels easy to be yourself and to perform and enjoy it together and to come into work happy for a change and it's just really nice. We've never been so content and happy and satisfied ... ever."

Sweet 7 is released on 15 March.

One last thing... Sugababes Guardian Interview

One last thing... SugababesSo many members, so little time to work out who's new; who can keep up with Sugababes 4.0? Rich Pelley, that's who!
Rich Pelley The Guardian, Saturday 6 March 2010

Sugababes, (l-r) Jade, Amelle, Heidi. Photograph: Samir Hussein/Getty

Hi, Sugababes! If you buy a broom, then you replace the handle, then you replace the brush, is it the same broom?

All: No!

Heidi (1): Cos it's got a different handle and a different head!

Amelle (2): So it's definitely a different broom!

Jade (3): You might change the handle and brush, but it's still a broom! It does the same job!

Good answer. Could the entire problem with the Sugababes be that your three-member dynamic directly conflicts with girls liking to go to the toilet in twos, so one of you is always left out?

Amelle: It's an interesting theory.

Heidi: Amelle tends to go to the toilet by herself.

Amelle: I do.

Heidi: But I tend to need someone to go with. So, you're right; we are leaving someone out!

Your new video is chock-full of computer-generated Sugababe clones. Would a spare clone each be handy?

Amelle: She could do my interviews for me!

Jade: I'd get mine to make me pancakes!

Heidi: Amelle would probably fall out with hers.

Amelle: Why isn't my food on the table, bitch! Mine would leave for sure! Ha!

In many ways you're the most racially diverse girl band ever (4). But are you sexist? Couldn't a bloke join?

Heidi: No!

Amelle: We're the Sugababes! We're a girl band!

Heidi: We wouldn't ask to join a boyband!

Liam Gallagher (5) says he's struggling to name his new band. Would you mind if he called it the Sugablokes?

Jade: Sugaboys is better!

Heidi: I'd be honoured! I really like Liam. I've been out a few times with him and friends. He's a nice fella.

Amelle: I've met Noel (6). He was getting his hair done next to me. I was like, "How you doing, you all right?" I think he was trying to copy my fringe!

How about Lord Alan Sugar (7)? Would people find him less intimidating if he rebranded as SugaAl-Lo?

Amelle: Straight away!

Heidi: Amelle would be good on The Apprentice if it was about cars.

Amelle: Or maths.

Jade: I'll draw the diagrams.

Amelle: Yeah, Jade's really good at drawing!

Heidi: What am I going to do?

Amelle: You can be team leader! You're good at fitting everything into place!

Jade, apparently you learned the wrong album before joining the Sugababes. Whoops! Were you planning to join Arctic Monkeys (8) or something?

Jade: I learned the songs that didn't make the album. I think they were testing me!

Amelle: Gotcha!

Thanks, Sugababes! You played a private party at Simon Cowell's (9) gaff in Barbados last new year. Is the thought of SiCo in a pair of Speedos as frightening as it sounds (10)?

Amelle: He was wearing a tight white figure-hugging top and black trousers. It was at night.

Heidi: I've seen him on the beach before. I was staying in the same hotel. I saw him in shorts but they didn't have a lasting effect on me. So they can't have been that bad. Ha ha!
