The Saturdays by Ikkin
It was something of a culture shock to exchange the sniffer dogs and security searches at student festival Beach Break Live in South Wales a couple of weeks ago in favour of Chester Racecourse where Cheshire ice cream, a Moet bar, and a Pimms stand greeted you upon your civil arrival for Chester Rocks on a glorious Saturday afternoon.
If the location didn’t give you an inkling to the ambience of this festival, you were assured upon arrival that this is modestly middle-class.
While the Sunday line-up consisted of ageing rockers, and ‘songs your dad would listen to’, Saturday kicked off what we called the ‘family day’ with the teeny-pop line-up attracting a deafening level of screaming 14 year old girls who were accompanied by their parents.
Stephen Langstaff and The Christians opened early to a small crowd who were still arriving or enjoying the stalls and the funfair, while Eliza Doolittle followed to draw the crowd in with her unique sound of folk pop.
With the crowd now sitting and enjoying the sun, Sugababes got the crowd onto their feet as they reminded us exactly how many chart topping hits we all know word-for-word with a recognisable 40 minute set, before The Saturdays and The Wanted exemplified our decision to call it ‘family day’.
The Wanted interacted with the crowd brilliantly and really came across as a bunch of down to Earth lads who were having a good laugh and enjoying being where they are as they pointed out a female police officer dancing along while patrolling the festival.

Headliner Taio Cruz closed the evening with his chart-topping singles ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Break Your Heart’ in what proved to be a great day to sit out in the sun and enjoy the music and the accompanied family friendly atmosphere.

Last weekend saw the launch of the new two day musical extravaganza Chester Rocks, held at the prestigious Chester Racecourse. Catering for fans of all music, Saturday showcased the best in UK pop while Sunday rolled out some cracking rock and dance acts. Skiddle headed down on the Saturday to see what all the fuss was about.
The weather could not have been better, blue skies, a light breeze and the occasional cloud to provide some much needed respite from the rays. Chester Racecourse is a mightily impressive venue; ornate old fashioned watch buildings look down onto the perfectly green racecourse. A refreshment village greets you on entering, with a selection of bars and food stands providing essential delicacies such as... fish and chips, beer, and champagne. The staff were friendly and the produce well priced, a good start to the day.
The main ‘arena’ comprised of a pretty huge stage, a large grass viewing space, with plentiful portaloos (all of an impeccable standard) and a selection of pretty thrilling fairground rides around the stage. The crowd was hugely varied; families enjoying a summer’s day out with blankets and picnics, younger pop fans waving their Heart FM flags and ‘We Love...’ posters enthusiastically, glamorous young guys and gals soaking up the party atmosphere. The whole day had a great vibe, very relaxed and family orientated with enough entertainment and space for the older crowd to hang out and have some fun.

Sugababes came on next (my personal favourites!), with a set of their greatest hits, new and old. The crowd lapped it up, and the ladies put on a fantastic show with boundless energy and some killer vocals.
The Saturdays followed, and I have to say, they were excellent. Complex dance routines, saucy outfits, and a perfect selection of up-tempo pop hits.
The Wanted drove the crowds literally wild with an energetic performance, and McFly blew us all away with pyros, fireworks and confetti cannons.
Taio Cruz rounded things off nicely with strong vocals, huge bass lines and all the electro bleeps of his biggest hits. The sound system was excellent, loud and clear, and videos shot from each side of the stage then displayed on a huge screen behind the acts, ensured the whole crowd got to see to the action up close.
A really fantastic day, helped undoubtedly by the glorious weather, the first Chester Rocks was in our view a huge success. A wonderful atmosphere, well priced tickets and refreshments, a truly impressive line-up of pop stars, and enough space to relax on the grass or go crazy to your favourite acts at the front of the stage. We will most definitely be returning.

ABOUT 20,000 people descended on Chester Racecourse for the eagerly-anticipated Chester Rocks festival at the weekend,

McFly, Taio Cruz, Sugababes and The Saturdays were just some of the pop acts that thousands of adoring fans flocked to see on Saturday, while artists including Feeder, Iggy and The Stooges and The Lightning Seeds pleased the rock groupies on Sunday.
Luckily for the crowds, both days were blessed with glorious sunshine, and families were kept entertained between acts with a funfair, facepainting and a variety of trade stands.
He said: "It turned out to be amazing, such a success and such a great local event for the city of Chester.
"This was a brand new event so there is lots of learning to take forward. Nothing on this scale has ever happened in Chester before but both days went amazingly smoothly.
"This is definitely something we would look to make an annual event. We’ll be going through the review process very carefully and looking at ways we can improve for following years.
"We were really lucky to hold the festival at such a great venue and I’m really pleased that lots of the feedback on sites like Twitter and Facebook has been so positive."

Rob March, Chester Racecourse’s head of marketing and communications said that the 'amazing' weekend went better than he could have hoped.
"This was a brand new event so there is lots of learning to take forward. Nothing on this scale has ever happened in Chester before but both days went amazingly smoothly.
"This is definitely something we would look to make an annual event. We’ll be going through the review process very carefully and looking at ways we can improve for following years.

You can't please all of the people all of the time.
But this weekend it seemed that Chester Racecourse did.
A music festival that books acts from Iggy Pop to The Saturdays just shouldn't work.
And yet, somehow, it did.
Of course, it helped to split it into two. The first day was a feast of pop as The Wanted, McFly, the Sugababes, The Saturdays, Taio Cruz and Eliza Doolittle attracted a crowd of teenagers and parents.
One of the best sets came from The Christians, whose summer soul-tinged pop worked perfectly in a festival environment.
The second day was devoted to a more alternative line-up with acts ranging from the Lightning Seeds to Iggy Pop.
